okay, so my orthodontist said i'd get my braces off in March, if I wore my rubber bands. Well, I have, but they're so painful (on my bottom molars) that I can't close my mouth, and I can't sleep, can't eat, can barely talk. It's almost unbearable. And they seem to shift back if I take them out for just a minute or two. Anybody know what I should do? Also, is getting braces off painful? Because these are coming off right before a trip to Italy, and I don't want excrutiating international pain. Thanks, much appreciated on both questions!

You have to leave the rubber bands on or you won't get your braces off in time. Take Tylenol or something similar for the pain. They'll probably hurt just for a few days, but make sure you're wearing them consistently,
Actually, getting your braces off shouldn't hurt at all. First they'll cut off the wire, then they'll take this plier-like instrument and twist off the bands and brackets. You'll feel pressure but not pain. It won't take very long to do this; the longest part of the process is cleaning your teeth afterward because you'll have little bits of glue and metal still stuck on there. Then they'll take you to another room and make the mold for your retainer. This is a little uncomfortable because they'll stick this stuff in your mouth that looks like Silly Putty and it'll make you gag. Then you're done but you'll have to come back in a couple of days to get your retainer and some final x-rays. You will love having your braces off and showing that beautiful smile! And you'll be able to eat normal food again! When I left my orthodontist's office after getting my braces off, they gave me balloons and a huge mug full of sticky caramel candy, popcorn, bubble gum and other previously forbidden goodies!
Make sure to sure to wear your retainer or your teeth will shift back! Don't let all that torture go to waste!

Talk to your orthodontist about it, the bands are prob too tight. Braces shouldn't be painful like that... And, no, they don't hurt getting them off. It feels kind of wierd, but no pain. They crack the metal off (it sounds bad but you dont feel it) and then they scrape the glue off, as I said it's wierd feeling but not painful. I would definitaly talk to your orthodontist, part of his job is to answer any questions you have, and make getting a great smile as painless as possible. Have fun on your trip!!!

You're supposed to take them off when you eat, and unless instructed not to do so, you should've been given a lighter strength to wear at night. Getting your braces off is a LOT less painful then you think (I got my braces off in march This year), it's like "SNAP" (You kind of feel them snapping off of your teeth) and then they're gone. They're probably going to put permanent retainers in your mouth (they don't hurt, I have them ^^) and you'll have to wear a retainer at night.

On a side note, my school is going to italy in march 07!
(Can you allow e-mail or e-mail me, I have a question for you!)

I agree, take something for the pain, it's only temporary, and the final results will be great. It could be worse, I wore a headgear! (Stop laughing! :) No, it doesn't hurt to have your braces removed.

LIZZIE,

YOUR ORTHO DOES HAVE RUBBER BANDS OF DIFFERENT TENSIONS. ASK IF THERE IS A LIGHTER TYPE YOU CAN COMFORTABLY WEAR.
ps. you have to take off the rubber bands when you eat
