2, if there is a pattern or a ritual to the killings. Serial killers don't just kill a lot of people, and it has nothing to do with numbers. Most "serial killers" are suffering from some mental illness or instability, and they kill in a series - pattern - and follow some sort of "ritual" or routine to each of the killings. They may escalate in brutality, but they will have the same sort of "markings" of having the same killer. Very rarely do serial killers change the way they kill or the type of victims they choose. Serial killers "choose" their vicitms - they don't just kill - and they kill for a "reason", not just to kill.

At least 3, I believe.
It's also not about the number of people you kill, but the selection of the victims. Serial killers target specific types of people, whether blonde females in their 20s or black males with glasses. That is what distingushes serial killers from just homicidal maniacs.

I think it depends on the method. If you kill two people and do something cool like; strip them of their skin and hang them from a tree, then you would be labeled "serial killer" right away. however if you kill several people in self defense or as an assassin you would not be a serial killer. But if you kill several thousand you would be a national leader.

A serial killer is someone who commits three or more murders over an extended period of time with cooling-off periods in between. In between their crimes, they appear to be quite normal, a state which Hervey Cleckley and Robert Hare call the "mask of sanity." There is often — but not always — a sexual element to the murders. All the murders must be completed/attempted in a similar fashion or the victims must have something in common, ex. occupation, race, sex, etc.

Only one if you kill them with a box of Cheerio's...

But seriously I would say three, as long as each murder is separate.
