Here are the things we do in our office as Juvenile Probation Officers in Indiana.

After a juvenile is arrested, he/she is given an appointment to come into our office for an intake. At the intake, I read the juvenile and his parent(s) the rights, then I read the police report to them. The juvenile is given the chance to agree or disagree with the police report as written. I also take background information on the juvenile. I use that information to write a Preliminary Report on the offense, stating that the juvenile agreed or disagreed with the police report, and telling about the juvenile. I make a recommendation on how the case should be handled: Petition filed (case goes to Court), an Informal Adjustment--IFA (Probation w/o going to Court, juvenile admits in our office), referral to another agency (i.e. welfare), or dismissal of charges.

The assistant Prosecutor who handles our juvenile cases reads the report and either follows the recommendation, or decides how she thinks we should handle the offense. She gets the final say, but she usually follows our recommendations.

If the juvenile is placed on an IFA, we decide the terms and conditions they will follow.

If a petition is filed, once the juvenile admits or is found to have committed the offense, the juvenile comes back to our office for a pre-dispositional (pre-sentencing) interview where we get additional background information. We write another report, for the Court this time, giving that information and give our recommendations for the terms and conditions of probation. Since we have sentencing guidelines in our office, the judge usually accepts our recommendations for the terms.

Once the person is on probation, we monitor their case from start to finish. We sign them up for programs and make sure they attend. If they fail to follow the terms of their probation, we file a Petition to Modify to let the Court know, and we take the juvenile back to Court to answer to the judge.

We go to Court every time our clients are in Court.

We administer urine drug screens and breathalyzer tests to the clients to ensure they aren't using drugs or alcohol.

We search their homes to make sure they don't have prohibited items. We don't have to have probable cause to search. The fact that they are on probation gives us the right to visit them at their homes and to search.

We talk to the juveniles and help them when they have problems. We give them praise when they're doing the right things, and sometimes we have to be harsh when they are doing the wrong things.
