The way you phrased your question, I am assuming you don't want JW's to answer.
There are my reasons people believe JW's are a cult.
My Webster Dictionary says under 'cult'
1. a system of religious worship. 2. devoted attahment to a person, principle, etc. 3. a sect.
Do Jehovah's Witnesses have a system of religious worship?
Yes, the bible, all of our beliefs come from the bible, it is not based on traditions.
Are Jehovah's Witnesses devoted to a person?
Yes, Jesus Christ is our Lord and King, Jehovah is our God.
Are Jehovah's Witnesses devoted to a principal?
Yes, the principals of the bible, and Jehovah's Word. Many Witnesses have chosen to die, than compromise their worship of God.
3. a sect: (same source: a group of people having a common philosophy)
Yes, go anywhere in the world and you will find Jehovah's people believing the same truths found in the bible.
We do not believe "emotional" feel good untruths that are common in the world today.
It is okay to disobey God, as long as it makes you happy.

They are considered a cult because they are the only religion whose majority of members remain faithful in all things unto Christ and God. When you ask any active JW a morral issue question, their response will be filter by what would Christ think. Ask someone in Christendom and their response will be how does it affect their person rights.
JW leaders don't remain leaders all the time and they don't get paid or receive any special dispensation for leading. The governing board live in the same two bedroom apartment that the factory volunteers live in. The governing board does not always reamin the same, but changes. Everyone is taught the same and is in a position to lead as an elder, an Overseer, a Circuit Servant, a District Servant, or Governing Board.
That is why it is so easy to split a growing congregation to create two smaller ones. Christendom can't do that because, first, they can't find people to lead in any great numbers, and two, a second congregation may drift away and form their own opinions on such things as Gays in the church. By keeping a growing church under one roof with one leader, there is less likelihood of people drifting away.

Because they don't know anything about them, it is the truth.
It has simple truths such as the earth will be filled with righteous people who live forever on the earth. The wicked will die and return to the dust. No ghosts, or hellish torment, just life or death.
Isn't that what human courts do? Killed murderers and rapists and serial killers? Some people simply don't deserve to live.
Those who do deserve to live in peace. They are non violent and it is easy to get out of that religion. But very difficult to stay in.
To stay in you have to be obedient to God's laws.
Which says, don't lie, steal, commit adultry or use force or violence., no murder, no war, no hate, no racist persons, or one looking down on others for any reason. Teach everyone is equal in God's eyes. No classes, no rivalry, no paid clergy, so it isn't all about the money. Can't be a cult they follow no human leader.
Their meetings are all open to the public. If you doubt their beliefs they will be more than happy to tell you about them. No secret society. Everyone knows what they believe.

Jehovah witness is not a cult, I think they're more closer to the true monotheistic faith of abraham compared to other christians...
But the only problem is, their activities are limited because they're controlled by people who worked in the "watch-tower" group...
To the perosn below me :
Same with normal christians, they don't follow the word of god, they follow the word of god being twisted and preach by their pastors... If you read the bible carefully, jesus never claim himself to be god. Even the suffering servant in Isaiah 53 is said to have descendants and offspring and yet you people don't believe Jesus has descendants . Go back and read !!!

From a friend who was shunned or dis-fellowshipped (sp?) A true Church would not abide by this practice. You would be free to leave and come back, not ignored or shunned by family members. This cult encouraged children to ignore their own Mother.

There are many reasons. The most important one is this:
Jehovah witnesses deny the divinity of Jesus Christ. They believe that Jesus was the Son of God but not God himself.
This more than any other reason separates J.W. from mainstream Christianity.

Is it because they deny the cardinal doctrines of historic Christianity?
Is it because they hold that they are the only true church on the face of the earth?
Is it because they are scholastically dishonest with the quotes from other sources?
These 3 are a wonderful start.

They consider Jesus as a minor diety, created by God (a contradiction in terms), who is not the everlasting Son of God, who believe in annilhilism (no Hell, just non-existence), other Christians as anti-Christ, the Trinity as being non-existence, who changed the Holy Bible into their own bible called "The New World translation."

is not my religion but I know the history of it. It was invented in 1887 by a female preacher. Do reasearch. No cults. They don't praise the devil, they don't believe in holidays or even birthdates.
