Good food. Some of the better brands that are worth buying because miniature schnauzers don't eat that much are:
Canidae, Royal Canine for puppies or for small breed, if you are getting a puppy there is one called :Baby Dog- by Royal Canin and it is a tiny kibble.
collar and leash and an I.D. tag engraved with your phone numbers, Vet's phone
Large pet stores like PetSmart and PetCo have machines where you can pick from an assortment of tags and engrave it on the spot.
toys.. some suggestions, a small Kong, toys you can put treats in, balls, puppy pacifier squeaky toy, etc.
(About a week after Christmas, PetSmart has sales on their Christmas toys and they are dirt cheap, the ones that are expensive but Christmas oriented. I stock up every year.)
Put money aside for regular Vet check ups, initial exam, worming, any needed shots.
You can get these doggie toothbrushes that fit on your finger and are disposable and some "doggie toothpaste" and massage your dogs teeth and gums.
Beats having plaque build up on their teeth and then having to get them cleaned or having the teeth get bad.
chew toys
If the dog won't be sleeping on your bed, you don't have to buy a bed, you can get a big pillow from a cheap store and put pillow cases on it.
If you get a puppy it will be a challenge to potty train it but once it is trained it will be worth the effort! Puppies can only hold their bladders, on average, about an hr. per every month of age. GL with your new dog. That is a good breed. I think you will be very very happy.
Almost forgot! You will need to get the dog groomed regularly. Shop around for pricing and references.

Hi Bethany I don't want to sound preachy BUT have to agree with the others about the risk of buying over the internet. Puppy farmers want to sell healthy looking dogs but they really don't give a toss about the dogs health once you have had it for a while. Before long you will fall in love with your dog regardless of where you got it from but wouldn't you rather a dog that will live to a ripe old age rather than die prematurely or be plagued with expensive illnesses. Our first dog was from a puppy farm- we bought it from Harrods and at 5 he is healthy but we were lucky and naive. We now know better!!!! Why not try looking for breed specific forums and wait until you get a feel for them and then ask for recommendations, if you are convinced that the forum is full of caring and professional breeders who know what they are doing? Best of luck

A crate to crate train him (house train). A Kong toy. He is going to be teething if not now then soon. Kongs are great for teething and to relieve boredom. My small dog loves it. Get him some toys especially the plush ones again my small dog loves the plush toys. A collar, a leash, a food dish, a water dish, a little sweater or jacket little dogs get cold easy. Most important your dog needs lots of TLC. Good luck.

I have a Min-Pin. His name is Spike and the breed itself is a very high strung breed. First thing ,get a cage, not a large one, big enough to put a small blanket in it. Get a few non toxic squeaky toys. Find a harness type leash so he or she doesn't slip out. This dog is fast, they prance like horses and run like deer. Spike liked to take off running at times,so I went out and bought a shock collar to keep him from running in the street. The cage is used to train the dog and eventually he walks in it himself and sleeps. It's his space. Also remember little dog, little bladder. Good luck...

WOW! Getting a cat and a dog at the same time huh? For a dog you will need food dishes, a proper food for the age of the dog and breed size, collar and name tag, plenty of chew toys and bones, a bed, brush, a good dog shampoo, nail trimmers and file, leash, doghouse (if going to be outside much), and a crate to housetrain him/her if they already are not. Good luck with your new animals.

I would first buy him a cage or crate to stay in because of their wolf mentality they look at it as their "home". Plus, dogs won't crap where they sleep. Make sure it's just big enough for him to sleep in and to do a circle. Buy him his own blanket, too.
I'd buy his own dishes/bowls. He'll probably pick 'em up and bring them to you if you miss his meals.
leash and collar. Definite needs.
Dog shampoo, brush, & plenty of toys--chewy things or toys that make noises like bells or squeaks.
If he's a puppy, don't feed him adult dog food. Also, don't feed him table scraps, chicken bones, or rib bones.
Guess that about does it.

Congratulations! Well, it depends if the dog is indoors or outdoors. If outdoors, he will need a doghouse and a dog bed and blankets since it's so cold. But if it's indoors, he'll need a dog bed and maybe some towels as blankets (that's what I use for my dog).
-dog food
-dog leash
-dog collar/harness
-dog biscuits (milkbones)
-dog shampoo
-bowls for food and water
-flea repellant
- some doggie chew toys/chew bones
-dog license (contact your local humane society)
Good luck!
