Different sounds have different effects on cats, yes. Their brains are somehow like ours. They can hear and can show emotions due to music/noises.

I sing to my cats, too! When I start singing "Happy Birthday," they'll come to me. You know how cats kinda sidle up to you, and plop down, and roll over...as if to say, "Here I am!" That's what they do.
They seem to enjoy music, but like you said, they may just want the attention.
I play beautiful meditation music a lot - or those beautiful nature sounds like the ocean or the wind or the rain mixed with soft music. My cats always seem so peaceful when the music is playing. So yes, I think they do like music.

I think they do. I know they process sounds. I have a CD recording of Orca Whales and whenever I play it my cats get low to the ground and slink around. They don't run away, they just take this low posture. They all seem to like music, but they don't want it played loud. One of my cats loves watching TV. If there is a scene with birds and the birds fly off the screen she runs to the side to see where they have gone. It is a hoot. Your cat may both enjoy the music and love hanging out with you.

My cats become calm, relaxed and contented when I play classical music - it puts them to sleep. When there are guests or "strangers" in the house, I always turn on the radio for them in my room so they can feel reassured that everything is OK.
But I have read somewhere that cats are more responsie to the high voices of women, rather than the low voices of men. Maybe that's why they like our singing and why more women seem to have cats as their favorite pets.

I always leave music on in my house when I am not at home. It seems to keep all of my pets (cats, ferrets and lizzards) calmer. Well at least they don't destroy my house or their cages when I do this. And your singing might have a pitch that your cat finds soothing, just like how when you talk softly to an animal it can calm them down.

When I had cats, they would come sit right next to me when I played the piano.
I also noticed they acted different ways depending on the music I had blasting in the house.
My cats loved Pink Floyd, but hated AC DC... go figure...

Of course they do. My neighbor always leaves her TV or radio on for her cat and the cat just loves it, even has come to expect it.

I occasionally will blast my house music in my house and my cats will be snoozing on top of the speakers. I think my cats love my house music too..
