The difference is that a comforter is filled with poly fiber filler and a duvet is filled with down feathers. Yes. You can buy duvet covers most everywhere... even WalMart now has some nice ones.
I prefer Duvet to comforters because you can change the duvet cover every season if you want to, you can fluff up the feathers just by shaking it, and it keeps you warm in winter, cool in summer.
I hate comforters because the filling always ends up flat, you can't easily change the look (you have to change the comforter), and I always prefer natural to synthetic.
Oh... and no matter what anyone says, you don't have to get the duvet dry cleaned. I have washed my down duvets for years now, in the washing machine on the bulky items cycle. Just make certain that you put it on low in the dryer, shake it out every now and again during the drying time and make sure it is completely dry before putting it back inside it's duvet cover.

I'm just correcting you to help, not to be picky - the correct spelling and pronunciation is duvet (doovay).
A comforter has batting in the middle and can have many types of fabric and designs for the covering. The whole thing is sewn through with a pattern in the stitching.
A duvet is a comforter or feather comforter cover. Think of it as a big pillow case with buttons for your exsisting or soon to be purchased comforter. The duvet allows you to keep your feather comforter stain free, and also gives you opportunity to change the look of your bedding for a bit less money (but not always!) It's a lot easier to wash a simple duvet with your sheets than to hassle with a comforter.
As with sheets, to avoid pilling, always choose a high thread count to your duvet - over 250 is best.
Good luck.

Ignore the design diva's advice. A duvet is a cover used over a comforter. The duvet is used either because the comforter is soiled, the wrong color, or "leaking" its filling. Some people prefer the look of a duvet to that of a comforter.

A comforter is generally thinner and is used over sheets/blankets to provide extra warmth. A duvet is puffier and is used as the sole covering; it is usually encased in a cover made from sheeting.
Duvet covers that you buy in the store are usually decorative rather than functional; I wouldn't want to sleep with a stiff brocade next to my skin! It's easy to make a duvet cover: just sew two sheets together on three sides and add ties to the top to close.

A comforter is a batting enclosed in fabric. This takes the place of blankets or can be used with your blanket.
A duvet is a cover for a comforter. Duvets can be used to change the look or your room just by slipping your comforter inside it as they come in many colors and patterns.
Also a duvet is used to help keep fine, expensive comforters clean and fresh. I use a duvet with my down comforter as down is hard to wash and clean. It keeps it nice and the duvet can we washed when needed.
The duvet has one openning and you slip the comforter inside and fasten. Easy as that.

The comforter is the warm comforter, the duvet is a cover you put on the comforter. You can't easily wash a comforter - particularly a feathered one - and dry it, so people buy duvets to put on them, which is the equivalent of a pillowcase for your comforter.

Yes.. If I had a dubet, I would get a cover for it.. The differnce between a comforter and a dubet is that the comforter is without a cover of course and is much thicker
