You need to condition her when it is not her bedtime. Leave her down there by herself for 15 minutes. Then let her out.Do this several times. Then increase the time to 20 minutes or a half hour. When she can handle that increase it to 45 minutes then an hour and so forth. Gradually keep increasing the time she stays down there by herself. Puppies have no sens of time. When you put her down there she is afraid that you are not coming back. By gradually increasing the time away from you you are showing her that you are coming back.

First they are pack animals and a basement away from you at the end of the day after being with you all day is a problem. She wants to be with you. Have you thought of a crate at night in your room? They don't cost that much and would work wonders for training and for the barking. If it isn't an option you have to be persistent and spend time in the basement with her during the day, making her a nice bed and then you just have to allow the barking for a while before she gives up and learns. you do have to be persistent though. don't let her stay one night up and then put her down the next, that won't work. It takes once for them to think it's ok. They really are pack animals and love to sleep with the other members of the pack. Good luck. This is a lifelong companion, you may want to try the crate thing and enjoy the companionship more. Mine is my bed pardner and I wouldn't have it any other way except a crate near me.

Dogs are pack animals and want to be with you of course but they can understand from you the leader that you want them to be alone for a certain amount of time and how she should behave. Close the door and stay on the other side for 5 mins. quietly. Then come in and give the dog some love. Leave again and stay outside the door for 10 to 15 mins. Correct the dog at first sign of bark or whimper with a loud slap on the door and a resounding no or whatever u usually use for no, stop etc.
No more than that, slap and tshh! for each whimper or bark.
You may have to do this twice in one night. It should only take the dog about two to three nights ...its best to try this during the daytime as well for practice.

Does she have to stay in the basement?

She is part of your pack now and she wants to sleep near the rest of the pack. This is normal dog behavior. I can understand you not wanting her to sleep on your bed, but perhaps you and she can work out a compromise.

How about if she could have a crate in your bedroom. Most dogs are easily crate trained. They like having their own, dedicated bed space. You can keep her toys there, so she knows that space is hers.

You can shut her in at night, and easily let her out if she needs to go outside for a bathroom break.

why have her sleep so far away? my puppy was sick with a cold when I got her and I let her sleep in my bed then when she got better she started sleeping in her crate in my bedroom at the foot of my bed and when she wakes in the middle of the nite I reassure her that I'm there and she can go back to sleep.
The basement is too far away for your pup.

Be patient and consistent. Keep putting her down in the basement, make it comfortable for her (blankets, toys , water). You have to stay with this routine and don't defer from it and eventually she will respond and go in the basement by herself or command when she is tired..

If you were her, would you want to sleep alone in the basement?
I know I wouldn't. I have a kennel for my Boston Terrier and when I go away or at bedtime she is kenneled up. She Know's where to go @ bedtime and feels safe there. But it has to be big enough for her to move around in comfortably.
