In order to appreciate any artistic expression that has anything to do with the bible, you have to suspend scriptural exactness, or your play or movie wont be much good to you. The Bible simply is not a script for movies. Plus, it was never intended to give historical accounts, but historical portraits. Big difference.
Literary licence is used that may offer certain symbolisms of truths taught elswhere. And until I see the movie for myself, I cant comment on it.
But in answer to your question, nowhere in the bible does it describe a snake spooking the donkey. It might have something to do with the snake getting his head crushed by the seed of the woman but that doesnt happen until Jesus dies on the cross.
Gen. 3:15 "I will put enmities between thee and the woman, and thy seed and her seed: she shall crush thy head, and thou shalt lie in wait for her heel."
This will explain more, because I think it's on the same track:

it's called poetic liscense. in those times/areas - that was a distinct possibility. in the Passion there was a flashback of Mary watching Jesus fall as a child - that too is not mentioned in the bible but anyone with children or who's been around children felt the pange of reality.

It's amazing how many "biblical stories" have been invented and accepted by the faithful - Like the concept of "rapture" No mention of anything like it in the bible,

that is one of many things that was added by script writers.
Having read the bible myself I can tell you that is not in there.
that movie and the bible are two seperate things.
It makes a good, exciting story but it isn't factual.
