It was said that Jesus would be born from the line of David. Ive heard that Joseph was used to complete that prophesy because he was born of the line of david. But if joseph wasnt the one who impregnated mary, then jesus is not related to him. can anyone help me understand this?

You ask a marvelous question. I shall attempt to answer the same way.
There are two geneologies for Jesus in the NT. Matthew (Jewish gospel) and Luke (Gentile gospel) They do not match. Mt. lists the royal heirs, L the natural descent. Mt. follows Joseph's line, Luke follows Mary's. Joseph has an adoptive relationship to one line and a physical one to the other. Which is true?
Mt. is tidy. He liked 3s so he divided the lineage into 3 groups. There are 14 names in each group. The Hebrew number for David (DVD) is 14. There are an extraordinary # of women in the lineage, unusual for a Jewish geneology. That is our hint, perhaps, the last group has only 13 names. Has someone been sloppy - or more likely, are we to count Mary as 14?
I've never impregnated my wife - we have four children who are all of my lineage. It is the miracle of adoption. Joseph adopting the Christ as God has adopted us.

Joseph was in the bloodline of King David.
But so also was Mary.

Matthew 1 has the ancestry of Joseph, Mary's husband.
see Mt. 1:6 for David

Luke 3: has the geneology of Mary.
see 3:31 for David

Lauren, for your information jesus is the son of david through virgin Mary. Virgin Mary is actually have mixed blood from the priestly line of Aaron and also another branch of davidic bloodline, not as same as the davidic bloodline like the ones in jospeh geneaology. Jesus couldn't have beeen the descendants of David through the line of Jospeh because firstly Jospeh is his adopted father and secondly in Joseph's geneaology lies a man by the name Jeconiah. Actually, Jeconiah is the descendants of david which is cursed by prophet jeremiah .Prophet jeremiah cursed him so that his seeds will never and ever be the King of israel. So that means, Jesus couldn't be the legitimate son of david through joseph since Joseph's forefather, Jeconiah, was cursed by jeremiah.

On the other hand, we should take a look at another Davidic branch which flows secret deep in the veins of virgin mary and also with a mix of Priestly line of Aaron.... :-)

Matthew had it from Joseph's line.

Luke wrote from Mary's line - both came from the line of David

It said he would be born from the house of David. He was born literally within the family of David.

Here's the explanation you need to keep in mind when dealing with the bible from now on:

The bible was changed and translated many many times, and even the ones who wrote it weren't perfect. I would recommend trying to get something out of the stories without confusing yourself over wordplay.

There's "Highly Educated" people out there who are just GUESSING what was meant by this or by that.

The passage you speak of was probably written in Matthew's gospel, because he spent his time trying to convince Jews that Jesus was the messaiah. Most of the other writers went outside palestine. He wrote for a Jewish audience, and maybe tailored things up to get them on board. And if he didn't, it's possible someone else did.

both mary and joseph were from the line of david. very distantly of course. you can find their geneologys in the Bible, I think in the gospels, but I'm not sure. I do know that you can find two different ones though.

shhhh, its a secret.

one of the problems of the idea of jesus being the messiah, is that the messiah has to qualify for the throne of david, through solomon.

and doing so requires a human mother and human father. (and is NOT god incarnate, or more divine, or a sacrifice)

the fact that without a human father, he could not have been the messiah (unless joseph was his biological father....which raises other problems aside from the faults in christianity's beliefs it would raise)
