When was the last time the transmission fluid was changed? Start there. Doesn't look good though.

Well I think that I would look at the tranny oil. If it is red thats good. Then If you have not changed the filter that would make it so the fluid would not flow right. Does the car make a squeeling noise when you shift into over drive? If so I think that it may be the touque converter.

in what has to be the biggest ford blunder scince the '74
mustang,ford made it's auto trannys with a pushbutton
o/d switch.what they don't tell you is that every time
you take off,if you are'nt going on the highway.you have to turn the o/d lite off everytime.if you don't,then you burn up the o/d solenoid and o/d gears in the tranny.
the o/d lite must be off in city driving.i'd bet that the problem is the o/d gears,it's only a matter of time before
the other gears follow suit because of high rev use.

Check the transmission fluid level, sounds like it is low.

Hi its Tee, I have your answer it maybe many things, 1 is catelek converter clooged, 2 electronic transmation control unit [O/D swicth etc], 3 transmation! thats all I know. GOOD LUCK!
