Over the weekend my oldest son ( 9 yrs old) was diagosed with chicken pox. I forgot to ask the doctor at the clinic whether I should keep my younger son (7 yrs old) home from school as well?

i kept my kids in bed with chicken pox for 2 wks.
it is highly contagious, and may give old folks shingles if they get near your child.
Call the school and they will approve of the child staying home til the pox dries up
Get the kid some aloe vera gel for itching especially in the head

from what i learnt:
the contagious chicken pox is caused by a varicella-zoster virus and can be spread through droplets transmission through the air, which means even through coughing and sneezing (besides physical contact through the blisters found all over the body).

i think it should be alright for your younger son to go to school as per normal, unless he is feeling unwell in any way especially if there is a fever. it may be a sign or sympton of being infected with the chicken pox virus. bring him to see the doctor for verification.

if you were to keep your younger son at home, do take precautions as it can prevent him from getting infected by his brother. have you and your younger son vaccinated. i've heard that chicken pox can be serious and can lead to complications, especially in children, elderlies and the immuno-compromised.

i would suggest you consult your doctor if you have any doubts.
take care!

As the younger child is not ill yet, you may send him to school. The incubation period of chicken pox is 14 to 21 days. It is most infectious during the late incubation period and the early period of rash. Infection lasts till all the lesions are scabbed.

Well, he should be fine to send to school, but if he shows any signs at all of getting sick keep him home, you don't want to get the all the kids at school sick right before the hoilidays. Also if he's only seven their probaliy not the much their learning at school right now and probality a short week so you might want to keep him home.

They're most contagious before you know it, but yes, you could keep him home, but why not ask the school nurse which they prefer?

It used to be you wanted all kids to get exposed (because it's much worse to get it as an adult) but with vaccines now, it's harder to get it from other kids.

But I'd say, ask the school nurse.
