She is a German Shephard; has a week old litter. We've got an appointment with the vet on Wednesday (48 hours away); I'm wondering if we need to be worried about this and get her in ASAP. Please help! Thanks.

It could be mastitis. if it is hot to thetouch, put warm damp cloths on it, and force the puppies to drink from this nipple to reduce swelling. Or, it could be a clogged milk duct, which is again warm to the touch and you pretty much do the same thing. Either way, if she starts getting strange, or starts looking sick, don't wait for the appt, take her in.

I agree, it sounds like mastitis and you should see if your vet can get her in tomorrow rather than waiting until Wednesday. Sometimes the females can absorb toxins from the bacteria causing the infection and get very very sick. I wouldn't wait...

One of our really good breeder clients waited a day or two and by the time she brought the female in, she was so sick she had nearly lost all her milk. The owner had to supplement those pups (12 of them) on a bottle for over a week. No sleep for her! Luckily mom recovered and the pups did fine.

Sounds like she may have mastitis...this can also be painful. You can help relieve some of it by applying a warm compress to the breast. But you have to do it more than once.
