If you love Australia because of Steve Irwin then you have a very jaded view on what our country is actually like. Think of America and then multiply it by 1000000. Then you will have Australia.

I went to South Australia for 3 weeks this past summer (the American Summer, July/Aug). I had an amazing trip and made alot of friends who I stay in touch with.

Australia is a very friendly country, as long as you dont cause trouble. Fighting is not tolerated, but there are very few guns, so its alot safer. I had a feeling of safety being there. Also, Australian cities are very clean compared to American cities. It was almost Europe-like. The sidewalks are clean and kept up much better than where Im at.

The food isnt that bad at all. Especially if youre vegetarian or can eat fish. Seafood is rather cheap and plentiful, I really enjoyed the calamari everywhere. What we pay $15 for in the States is about $4 in Australia.

Australians are friendly people for the most part. There is alot of countryside and alot of land that has been given back to the Aboriginals. Keep in mind that Australia was only settled in the 1800s, so its younger than America.

Also, dont expect the average Australian to know who George Washington is. I found it amusing that when I would show them a one dollar American bill, most of them asked me who that guy on it was. Then asked me if he was important or not.

There are alot of different cultures in Australia. I met alot of greeks, vietnamese, turkish, africans, british and more. Its very diverse. Also the climate is wonderful and the animals are exotic and tropical. One thing I found hard to grasp was their birds. Parrots and cockatoos are average/normal wild birds. And they are everywhere. Birds that are worth $1000s in the states are just snacking away on the beach nearby. It was really strange to see all these colorful birds, which is something we dont have much of in America, atleast not in the wild. Most of our birds are camoflauge color.

Overall, I think you would be crazy not to enjoy Australia. Although I did not see nearly enough of it, I plan to visit again, I have alot of mates over there. And from my experience, they really want to meet Americans and talk to them and ask them questions. I had people lining up to ask me stuff about America. It got on my nerves after a while because Im not much of a spokesman.

I'm a Canadian who just returned from travelling Australia for the better part of a year. I've been to a lot of countries around the world and i must say that Australia is one of my favorites. The Aussies are some of the most polite people i've come across in recent years, the beaches are gorgeous, and so is the weather. I highly recommend going there.

It's actually not all that different from the States. It's primarily an english speaking country, it's a huge continent - so all the states have fairly different weather and therefore slightly different cultures, we have big cities that are cultural hubs (mainly Melbourne and Sydney), our population is highly multi-cultural and we have everything from snow-capped mountains to beautiful beaches.
Of course each country has it's own unique flora and fauna and regional accents but really it's very similar to any other developed western country in the cities - as they all are really. That said, it is a beautiful place with a lot to offer, unique traditions and a friendly, laid back population. You'd have a good time here!

G'day! It's beautiful! I live there. Australia is pretty hot in summer and it's properly snowing over in the states at this time of year. But is like the states.

well, its big, very big.

Hot, lots of variety, great beaches, very friendly people, great food,
very slow and laid back.

A great place to live. You would feel very much at home here.

Sydney gets a tad humid over summer plus it can get very hot.
