Define shallow. To me it's just on the surface... that it doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things... that it has little meaning. People say that only dating hot people makes you shallow. But there are evolutionary reasons for a woman to want a strong man and for a man to want a feminine woman. But what evolutionary reason is there for wanting a mate with a good sense of humor? Wouldn’t the lack of a meaningful reason make any desire MORE shallow? Is there a truly MEANINGFUL reason behind the desire for humor?

BTW, You can’t say that having a good sense of humor is good because having humor in the world is good. Nor any variation of that phrase. It’s circular reasoning. Let’s have some real answers about the meaning, morality and superiority of humor vs beauty. Thanks.

You have to have intelligence to have a good sense of humor. Wit is not possible if you're witless. A good sense of humor is in the same category as intelligence; you either have it or you don't. All the wanting in the world will not make it happen.

The wanting of a quality IS somewhat shallow, and no different
than wanting to be pretty, for example. The reason why people want a mate with a good sense of humor, or at least a compatible sense of humor, is because of the extended conversation that one knows they will eventually have with one another. Do you want to spend your life with someone who gets mad at everything, or someone who can make something funny? It borders on a technique for survival.

Shallow-caring about looks only and not wanting anything to do with a long lasting relationship. You are just in the relationship for sex.

I date hot ppl bc I am a model. People tell me I have a great personality and sense of humor. I would like a man that was hot, caring, that knew how to cuddle, and had a sense of humor, but we cant have everything.

Shallow is a relationship that is based on pure physical emotion...a sense of humor usually develops and is expressed in a relationship when even the good happenings between 2 people goes off the beaten path, but we still have each other and all we can to do is laugh about it.

Humor and other personality traits are what draw people to each other and encourage long term commitment (w/o it you would have a flippin dull relationship) and therefore babies. Sure physical traits are important for choosing mates as well, but hey this is the 21st century- we can at least pretend that those are not what draw us to the opposite sex the most- and we all know that appearance is no the only attractor.

Wanting a good sense of humor or having a good sense of humor? Which one? If you want to have your date or friends to have a good sense of humor, no, there is nothing wrong with that. That does not make you shallow.
It makes you human. There is nothing wrong with having a good laugh and enjoying yourself. I mean, with so many things out here to take seriously, what is wrong with a little laughter to lighten things up? Nothing. You and your mate should sit, and watch a movie and enjoy yourselves with a good laugh.
Absolutely nothing wrong with that at all.

It may make one shallow if humor, like beauty or wealth, is the only quality one is looking for in a possible mate/friend.

sometimes its good to associate with people that can really make you smile and laugh. for me, i can be a worry wart and be serious but if someone really says something funny, i let go and become more less serious and take light of situations that seem horrible or when my day goes bad. i would say that this is not shallow but about how someone feels. if someone makes you happy because they make you laugh vs someone makes you feel special because you find them strong/beautiful physically, those are two different things but i feel that personality and communication is more longer lasting then being with someone based on physical appearance alone. its about being different.

Because having a good sense of humour is important for the soul to develop, good looks isn't. When we die, our looks mean nothing, but our spirit with everything we have learned and our sense of humour lives on. That is why. HTH : )

I think wanting humor in a partner is a sign of sophistication, intelligence, flexibility and confidence.
