Nothing you find at a grocery store is going to be a good food. High quality foods can be found at large pet store chains, or online. A couple of foods I like are Nutro Natural, Innova, and Cannidae.
There are other high quality dog foods. Here's how to spot them:
A high quality food will have little or no fillers such as corn, wheat or soy. These aren't very digestable for dogs, and are common food related allergens. Since you were seeing corn meal in the first few ingredients, those are not high quality foods. Foods list ingredients by content, with the ingredient it contains most of at the top.
A high quality food will not contain BHT, BHA or Ethoxyquin, these are all chemical preservatives that have been linked to cancer.
A high quality food will not contain by-products of any kind. Meat meals are ok as long as the source of the meat is listed, such as Chicken Meal.
A high quality diet should have meat as at least the first ingredient., and be made from human grade ingredients. Foods that don't use human grade ingredients often get their ingredients from less than desirable sources, such as meat from animals that were diseased, or euthanized.
There is another diet option other than dog food. Some people choose to feed a raw diet. This involves feeding the dog raw meaty bones and organ meat. However it is not as simple as throwing a couple chicken bones in a bowl everyday. If you wish to feed this type of diet, do lots and lots of research first. Switching to this diet without knowing what your doing can lead to nutritional problems for your dog. I'll give you some links as a starting point in research if you are interested in this type of diet.

Half a cup to a cup a day doesn't sound like enough for a Bulldog puppy to be eating. I have 5 8 1/2 week old pups and they get 6 cups a day of Solid Gold. My thoughts are that she doesn't like the food because if mine didn't like a food I was trying they wouldn't eat much either. As far as a brand to feed, you will probably just have to do a trial and error. Some dogs do better on the higher quality foods and some do better on the cheaper food. For example, I have one friend whose Bulldog thrives on Innova Evo and then another who has tried every high quality food out there and Iams is the only thing her Bulldog can eat without having problems. I would start out by trying the better brands though like Canidae, Innova, Solid Gold, California Natural, Wellness, Eagle Pack or Flint River Ranch just to name a few. As far as the RAW, most vets DO NOT recommend feeding RAW until the dog is AT LEAST 1 year old.

Feed a good quality food such as Wellness, Canidae, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul Puppy formula,Blue Buffalo, Premium Edge, Percise...steer well away from foods such as Purina puppy/dog chow, pedigree, IAMS/Eukanuba, Science Diet..these foods contain way too much corn and other cheap filelrs and by products.

Look for a high quality large breed puppy food. (I know, most people don't think of English Bulldogs as a large breed, but by weight, they are.) Large breed foods have a balance of nutrients to help them grow at a healthy rate, and may help prevent some large dog problems like hip dysplasia.
The first ingredient should be a meat. (Chicken, beef, lamb)
Iams is pretty decent, but we like Blue Buffalo.

Canidae in All Life Stages formula, Wellness Puppy, or Innova Evo. Trust me, those foods are very good for your puppy. Try mixing the food with 25% canned and 75% dry to prevent him from having the runs. Also what Mac Attack said, yes please don't buy your puppy any commercial food. It has corn, wheat, and soy which is indigestible for him, animal or meat by-products which is nasty. It has anything and everything left from animals, and they even add roadkill and euthanized pets and call it animal by products. (yes it's true, reasearch online and see I'm not kidding). Anything that has BHD, BHT, and Exoyquin or EQ is harmful and poisonous preservatives that will harm him later on in life.

I would follow the advice of the posters and use a food specifically formulated for puppies. I would also use a premium dog food that has the meat listed as the first ingredient. I would not use a grocery store brand as most of them have corn meal as the primary ingredient. One grocery store brand that does have meat as the first ingredient and I do use on occasion is "Purina One" with the burgandy packaging. I get the Lamb & Rice for my babes.

Definitely not commercial foods, you will only have problems later...definitely feed the dog the same good quality and healthy foods that you eat, including fruits, and don't forget the bones for dental health. Most commercial foods including Hills Science Diet, Eukanuba etc... all contain highly dubious ingredients...

we started our swiss mountain dog on a great food - solid gold - for large breeds, but it was too rich for him and gave him the runs for weeks. (we did the whole 25/75 thing and weened him off of his old food so his problem didn't have anything to do with that)
we had to switch him to a food not so rich to settle his stomach and we chose eukanuba lamb and rice formula for puppies. i don't see why we would switch back to the wholistic foods because he does fine on this food and is very happy to have solid stool instead of solid gold! they make a lamb and rice formula for older dogs as well.
it is easy to pick up at any petsmanrt and you don't alwyas have to go back to the same ONE store in town that sells the super expensive wholistic dog food.

pedigee and puppy chow are good. Just keep him on puppy food for 2 years. He'll get alittle bigger on puppy food.
