I"m a working man thinking about getting a kitten. Would it be too much for them to handle to leave them alone for 8 hours during the week?

Kitty will be JUUUUUUUUST FINE! Just leave water, food and a fresh litter pan and they can rock and roll for a few days. I wouldnt leave kitty alone though for a night just yet. Wait til they are close to 1, then you can start leaving them home for a day or two or three without anyone there.

I have 3 cats. Two of which I got from the local shelter. And the other one was born on the farm about 14 years ago. He's an old kitty. The only time I see my cats are when its bedtime. They don't come out of where ever they are hiding until I am ready to go to bed. They are use to being alone for 4-12hours a day. They are very independent. Except for when it comes to bedtime. Frisky sleeps by my head, Kiki sleep by my chest along with the dog. And Zoe usually sleeps on my legs or on the other side of my head.

Your kitten will be just fine. Just remember when you get a new kitten to allow the kitten into each area of your home slowly. Like confine it to one room for a week. Then broaden its horizons a bit and so forth and so on. That way you know kitty will be OK with the litter box.

Depends how old the kitten is and what kind of personality he/she has. My new kitten is about 2 1/2 months old and can entertain herself if she wants to or if not, she goes to sleep. So I don't worry that much about her. I play with her and give her a lot of attention once I come back and also give her canned food when I come home (until then I leave her with dry food and water). Make sure there are a lot of toys (balls with little bells inside them are good) and a scratchpost around and the kitten will do well. Cats are very independent creatures, they actually enjoy being alone sometimes. BUT! If you get a shy kitten who wants a lot of attention and seems lonely, that's a big NO. As long as it's weaned and doesn't seem to be too lonely and/or bored, it will keep itself busy.

Think about getting 2 kittens that are littermates. It really ends up being less work for you in the end as they keep each other Very occupied-especially when they are kittens. I have too male litter mate cats (they use the same litter pan)and when they were kittens they were inseperable. They were So attached! Then when they got to be around 2 they became more independent but still play at night together. I would definately get 2 littermate kittens again!

I've had cats all my life, and one of the things I love about them is that they can handle being alone. It would be best to get your kitten at the beginning of a vacation, when you can spend time with him. But once the kitten feels at home, it should be perfectly safe to leave him alone during your normal workday if he is in a safe, well-protected, comfortably warm environment. That means with acessible food, water, bedding, and litter box, with no access to electrical cords or toxic materials such as some house plants, including the ever-popular Christmas pointsettia. Your kitten should have his own space inside your home. One place he should not be is the garage, because antifreeze drips out onto the pavement and cats are very attracted to its sweet taste although it's very poisonous.

As long as the kitten is in a safe room with all his necessaries around (water bowl, food bowl and kitty litter box) and his favorite toys, he will be alreght. You'll find that he'll sleep or take several cat naps while you're out and demand immediate attention when you get home - petting, cuddling, playing, feeding, grooming, etc. Cats respond well to routine and once your routine is established, the kitten will feel "all's well with the world."

Kittens are like babies, they can and will get into all kinds of trouble, like chewing or pulling on electrical cords, getting into household detergents, getting into the trash, and so on. Unless you are prepared to kitten proof your home, I'd suggest getting an older kitten or even a young adult cat. Shelters are full of them since everyone always goes for the kittens and the older kittens and young adults are overlooked. Even consider an adult cat, they can sometimes be the most wonderful pets, their personalities are already established, routinely use the litter box, most are already spayed and neutered and they don't require the amount of attention a kitten would.

No way, cats are very independent animals.. if any animal can manage to stay home alone, its a cat.. as long as you have a litterbox, cat food and water, they are fine. If its a kitten, get some toys too. But 8 hours a day is alright..just pass out alot of love when you are home.

Kitty will be fine as they sleep a lot when they are very little. Make sure to have enough food and water out for them. Have you considered adopting a littermate so that kitty has a friend to play with?

Best wishes.

Yes, kittens need a lot of socialization to humans when they are young. Get two kittens and you and they will have a ball together and they will have a good time and company when you are away.
