Ever since I got pregnant with my first child I've become very sensitive to any violence real or dramatized. I can't watch shows I use to enjoy, like the Shield, and I find myself skipping articles in the newpaper because I find almost any violence too disturbing. This has been going on for over a year now. Do other mom's have this same reaction?

Absolutely! Especially anything involving children - I can't watch anything where kids get hurt or sick or die.
My mum used to talk about it all the time as we were growing up. She said if she even thought someone was looking at us wrong, she'd want to beat the living crap out of them, and if someone had hurt us, I truly believe she would have done just that.
Mums are fiercely protective of their little ones - it's all part of that survival instinct thing, ensuring the next generation survives so that they in turn can have their own little ones.

For me personally, I think once a woman has a child her outlook and views change to a certain extent.
Because we are now with child, we become more protective of the world around our child/ren and become more aware of the dangers.
I used to be extremely carefree, whereas now I am more aware and take notice more and would never put myself or my child in a situation that could be potentially dangerous.
I think it's the maternal extinct.
I am more sensitive to stories dealing with children - because I can now understand what and how a mother feels.
I think it is just that - an understanding - an understanding of danger, of protectiveness, an understanding of compassion and also an understanding that unfortunately things can happen that are not necessarily in our control.
They say there is no greater love than a mothers love.
My feelings changed towards alot things once I had my daughter and for the most part for the better.
I think as a mother, but more importantly as a decent human, we just can't comprehend how people can hurt children or eachother.

It's the same way with me. My daughter is 16 months old and I can no loger even watch the news. Last week I was having lunch in the cafeteria with a co-worker, the news was on and they did a story about a woman who killed her 18 month old son and then threw him in a dumpster!!! I was so upset, I walked out!! I came back from my lunch early, and that story haunted me all night long, I even had to hold back the tears I wanted to cry for that little boy. It's normal to feel this way I suppose, I have posted a few qesutins on this topic thinking that I was crazy or something LOL. Having a baby changes EVERYTHING, including what you can and cannot handle on the TV or the Newspaper!!!

I am actually more interested in those events and information because I am a Mom. The more I know - the better prepared I am to protect my children from the world around them.
I just try not to do it in a crazy- the world is so big and scarey- kind of way.

yes, absolutely, I watch what I want to, when they are asleep. I know you can't shield them from everything, but I sure give it hell ! If you don't like violence , don't watch it. We would probably all be better off without so much of it, but, there it is !

'This is just your maternal instincts kicking in. You probably feel the need to protect your young children from this violence. Besides that, if you've been watching their happy little children's shows...well anything violent would be a huge shock after that! =)
