Euthanasia solution is a controlled substance, and as such is regulated and logged by various countries' drug administration. It's illegal to obtain without a veterinary license, and illegal to administer unless you're a doctor or registered euthanasia technician. If you're asking because you want your cat to pass away peacefully at home, you might be able to find a house-call veterinary practice who will come to your house to euthanize your cat. I hope you have some luck finding a doctor and peace with your kitty's passing.

I dont know about the legalities of it all, but perhaps you need to consider the moralities of it.

Firstly, why do you feel the need to euthanise your cat? Secondly, what method are you thinking of using?

Any method other than the specific vet administered euthanising injection would be illegal under the cruelty to animals act I would imagine.

I would hope that the drug they use to perform euthanisations is prohibited to anyone other than trained professionals.

The only other way to give your cat an assisted death, for its best interests would be a long term diabetic cat, or similiar, whereby you could induce them into a coma with extra insulin. However, I know the guilt faced by many people when asking a vet to aid their pets passing, imagine how bad this would be at assisting your own.

If you are wanting your pet to die peacefully at home, find a vet that will come to your place. There are plenty of them around these days.

I would not recommend you do this yourself at all.

I don't know about Australia, but I do know if you don't know what you are doing, you could potentially cause a painfull death for your cat. Euthanasia means peaceful death and if you can't guarantee you can perform that, then seek the help of a vet. In the US, the drugs used for euthanasia are considered controlled dangerous substances and require a federal permit to handle the drugs, maybe it's different in Australia. Are you considering another method of euthanizing your cat? shooting? gas? poison? Please consider giving your cat a peaceful death by someone who knows what they are doing and can be compassionate.
