A 7yr old schnauzer gave birth when she was 3 yrs old. After that she developed ansiety and fear of storms and loud noises. Also she chews her paws to the point of bleeding. The vet prescribed tranquilizers but I don't want her drugged up. I have been giving her a homeopathic medicine that helps her but it doesn't really solve the problem. She has also been given treats to chew on but after she finishes them she goes back to her paws. Does anyone have any other ideas that would help this dog?

Foot chewing can be a sign of an allergy. Have her tested for allergies. Dogs can be allergic to a number of things, their food, cleaners, your carpet, grass, pollens, etc. If you can find out what she is allergic to you can minimize and hopefully eliminate her exposure to it.

As far as fear of loud noises that you will have to work on gradually. Get a tape of a storm. Play it a very low level, while doing positive things with her such as playing a game or giving her treats. Gradually increase the volume slowly over several weeks until you can finally play it loudly without a reaction from her. If she starts showing signs of getting scared, end the session. The next day start a couple levels below where you were when she started to get scared, and then gradually build your way up again.

Is she crated? That goes a long way to soothe anxiety.
