overnight if you have time. is it cold where you live? put it out on the porch for a while, will chill faster than the fridge. don't freeze it.

Keep it in the fridge for 2 hours.

Don't put it in the freezer, because that won't help. The dough needs to rest in the fridge so the flour sucks up all the butter. You'll see the difference when you take it out of the fridge.

The dough changes color and texture as it sits in the fridge. You can look at it and try to take it out when you think it's been in long enough, if you're short on time.

the dough needs to be thoroughly chilled so you can cut it into slices. Freezing is acceptable but sometimes adds moisture to cookies and they will spread a bit too much. Best to wrap a roll of dough in plastic wrap and leave in fridge but no longer than a week.

It just needs to be in there long enough to get solid so you can cut the dough into rounds for the cookies - about half and hour to and hour

I say at least 2 hours, but I put mine in overnight. I usually make the dough and icing and refrigerate...cut out and bake the next day and then put icing on and decorate the next day. Just to minimize all the mess..and it makes it more enjoyable when you aren't doing 50 things at once.

Just to get the dough good and cold. flatten it out and put in refrig.. You dont want to take a chance of freezing it. If dough id warm it wont hold its shape as you cut and transfer to baking sheet.

Let it chill at least an hour! You will have an easier time rolling and cutting them out if the dough is really cold and stiff.
