Feed him good quality dry food and you probably won't have to do a regular cleaning.

The answer depends on who you ask. Dental nazis will say that pets should have their teeth cleaned every 6 months just like us. However, considering that our dental cleanings don't require general anesthesia and our pets do most vets and owners would agree that every 6 months is excessive. Most vets do agree that a dog's teeth should be cleaned when there is evidence of dental disease such as tartar or gingivitis. For some dogs, yearly cleanings are a good idea, but for most dogs every few years is more appropriate. In the 7 years I've had my first dog (who was guessed to be 2-3 years old when we adopted her) she's had her teeth cleaned ONCE, and even then it was mostly a "let's do her teeth while she's out anyway" kind of thing when we had a lump removed. She's a german shepherd, a breed well known for having good teeth, and she has always just had good teeth. Breeds like chihuahuas, who are known to frequently have dental issues, may need their teeth done more frequently. Your vet will be able to tell you if your dog should have his teeth cleaned or if they are just dirty and it's something that can wait another year or so. Your vet will also be able to run blood tests and tell you whether or not the risk of the anesthesia is worth the benefits of doing the dental. While anesthesia is never 100% safe, vets make it as safe as it can be. And while there is a risk with anesthesia, there is also a risk with dental disease. Dental disease can be painful and it can be a source of bacteria which can travel through the bloodstream and contribute to heart damage/disease.

You need to brush your dog's teeth with doggy toothpaste and a rubber thimble-looking thing every other day for his teeth to be healthy. No dog owner likes dog cavities now do they!

They SHOULD stay pretty clean naturally if you feed them dry foods.
But... if you're a person of technicalities, try the answer above mine.
