Flights are probably going to be the expensive bit, sorry!!!
But.. accomodation, stay in Youth Hostels.... they are dirt cheap, usually put on activities/guided tours relating to where you are staying... And you meet lots of interesting people!!

First, fly into Ontario instead of LAX if you're headed to the LA area. Ontario is a much easier and less crowded airport. Once in California, you can use Southwest Air to fly north or south depending on what you want to see. It's hard to answer your question otherwise because it really depends on what part of California you want to see.

Cheapest advice -
Row across the Atlantic. Hitchhike across the States, sleeping rough. Eat wild fruits and berries, or with Vagrants in Soup Kitchens.

i went for 10 days to vegas,grand canyon, and hollywood for £399 all flights accomodation included and loved it. look out for advertisments in The Sun newspaper that is where i found it though it is a bit more expensive now

rent a mini-van and remove the back seat. You could sleep in the back of the van. Park in Walmart lots over nite for free. Buy groceries and picnic at the parks and beaches for most of your meals.

Use southwest they have cheap internet packages. If you book a room in advance you can probaly get it for less. Even one on the beach.
