The Knicks are very lousy, so tickets won't be too hard to come by. You can try either www.ticketmaster.com or www.stubhub.com. The cheaper the tickets, the further you will be away from the action, but there are good sightlines throughout Madison Square Garden - you won't be blocked (plus, the fans in the cheap seats are usually the most fun).
The New York Rangers (ice hockey team) also plays at Madison Square Garden, and they're actually pretty good this year. Same websites for tickets, but they will likely be somewhat more expensive because they're a good team. I've always sat in the upper deck (400 level) for Rangers games -- the view is fine and it's can be a lot of fun up there.
Oh, and FYI on the websites -- Ticketmaster sells at face value, as set by the team. Stubhub is a complete free market, so while you can sometimes find tickets for good deals, people will sell them for whatever the market can bear.

As you say you're English, nothing in the US will compare to experiencing a Premiership match (I speak from experience on both sides of the pond).
Despite living in New York, I personally do not care for any of the local sports or sports team. That said, the big draw does seem to be the Knicks in basketball or the Rangers in ice hockey. American football season will be over by then, and the baseball season will not have started yet. Both the Rangers and Knicks play in Madison Square Garden.
As for obtaining tickets, I don't think it should be too difficult to obtain seats for the Knicks - like usual, they're pretty bad this year.

For the Knicks, you probably could buy seats in the 300 section. Not the greatest but also not the worse seats. Sad to say, however, the Knicks are not playing too well this season, so you should be able to get good tickets for the home games at Madison Square Garden on Seventh Avenue and 32nd Street.

I would say skip the sports and use the $ to see a show instead. The Knicks are crap. Rangers have been OK, but not consistent. It isn't really worth the money to go see any sports events in the city. You're better off using the money to get some discount theatre tickets.

nicely, as those solutions will tutor, the city is as diverse as human beings's responses to it. I do ought to assert that i got here upon it hilarious that Ms. Candylicious interestingly thinks NYers circulate to TS for NYE - it relatively is a strictly vacationer ingredient to do. Which surely is a valid element - there is vacationer manhattan, and genuine manhattan. One is a lot extra useful than the different. In genuine manhattan, you are able to: consume a physically powerful meal for low greenback (while you at the instant are not choosy approximately placing), avert SoHo in the afternoons, understand a quiet dark spot for a physically powerful reliable drink in each and every community, locate paintings everywhere, be invited to weird and wonderful events with mind-blowing human beings in attendance, and have any good or provider introduced or finished to or for you everywhere you like (at any time). in short, it relatively is tremendously cool, yet you have have been given to be keen to regulate your way of life to in wonderful condition the city's calls for. communicate high quality fairly than volume - purchase one particularly magnificent ingredient, rather of five crappy ones. that comes with clothing, drinks, footwear, luggage, furnishings, nutrition... each and every thing. you have have been given nowhere to place extra effective than that besides ;-) Get used to walking - it relatively is the manhattan way. don't be afraid to be friendly to a stranger - it makes life extra relaxing. There are a million strategies wherein manhattan is excellent, in case you relatively include the city.
