Yes. The City of Sunnyvale, California (no small town) has had a "Public Safety Department" which combines the two forces.

When I was young, our neighbors had a house-fire. FIRST on the scene were two "police-officers" who opened the trunk on their cruisers and donned their fire outfits... They opened the hydrants and ensured that the people where out of the house.

ALL officers on this force are cross-trained, and do 2 year tours with either the fire or police divisions and then switch.

We had a large fire here in my area of Southern California, and one of the chiefs on the scene at our house was also a sheriff's deputy, so yes, it's possible.

In Kalamazoo, MI (yes it is real) the police and firemen are the same they are cross trained and they have there fire gear in the trunk of the police cars.

yes as long as department officials or civil service commission approves. there are many people in police/fire/ems that have dual employment within the same communities.
I was ff/emt and dispatcher with different community and knew many ppl that did this.

I think it depends on the town or area. If you were in a REALLY small town it could be possible.
