this is a bit of a toughie, but i will give you all a clue, uk coal miners have these 2 chemicals inside a "self rescuer" which is worn underground during a fire. sorry but i dont know if usa miners have the same equipment.

the answer is hopcalite (copper and manganese oxides) used as a catalyst, and good old libr lithium bromide, nobody got it bang on so best answer goes to -

One type of filter contains LiOH. It absorbs the CO2 from the air (when it is present in high concentrations) to form Li2CO3 and H2O.

To turn CO into CO2 you would need something that adds O2 to the CO. Maybe they use something like a chlorate. These will decompose to give O2 when heated.

CO2 is not breathable. Although it does not bond to hemoglobin as CO does it still does not get you oxygen which is needed. O2 combines with hemoglobin to form oxyhemoglobin, CO binds the hemoglobin as carboxyhemoglobin which does not break down easily. CO poisoning can be long term.CO2 may not be poisonous but it can kill you by lack of O2. They do carry carbide in the mines.

Excuse me, but surely breathable carbon dioxide is an oxymoron when referring to any animal.

Just to let you know it would take less concentrations of CO2 to kill you than CO. There is only .02% CO2 in the atmosphere.

Maybe I'm being dumb, but carbon dioxide is not breathable. We need Oxygen.

One will do - oxygen.The resulting fire might not be popular with the miners, thogh.

if they want to make Co2 , they are some very dumb coal miners and won't last long anyway
