Why walk? OK - here's what you do. Take the Shuttle at Times Square/42nd St. It's in the train station. It goes to the east side - Grand Central Station/42nd street. That's all it does, go crosstown. East to West. 4 Train (express) one stop downtown is Union Square. The local train across the platform from the 4 is the 6. It will take you to SoHo.
Cabs not needed. One shuttle ride. East to West.

It's a longish walk down Broadway (about half an hour if you walk like a New Yorker), but a quick (5 minute) subway ride. From Times Square you can take the downtown N, Q, R, or W trains to Union Square -- the N and Q are express and would be two stops, the R and W are local and would be four stops.
Soho is close to Union Square -- from Union Square you could either walk south on Broadway about 15 blocks (which takes about 15 minutes), or get back on the subway and take either the downtown 6 train three stops to Spring St. or the downtown R or W train two stops to Prince St.
Have fun!

Times Square is about a mile and a half north of Union Square, then Soho's about a mile below that. Take the 6, N, R, or W subway lines from 42nd street to 14th street. Then take the 6 to Spring Street to get to Soho.

Times Square is from 42 to about 50th.
Union Square is from about 14th to 19th.
Soho is south of Houston Street.
Many subway lines run from Soho to Times Square because they are both more on the west side.
Union Square is more on the east side so you might have to walk a bit from getting from the west side to the east side. But it isn't any big chore or anything like that. You can always take a cab to or from a subway stop if you don't want to or just can't walk.

if it were me, I would take the inbound N Judah light rail car from Powell station, which is right by union square. The N Judah goes directly to the ball park. I think its like a 15 minute ride. This is fastest way and also the least amount of walking. otherwise, ya the 30 or 45 would get you close. its walkable but kind of a sketchy walk...especially at night after the game is over. in short, its not that far. union square is a nice place to stay. have fun.
