Technically speaking, it's about the resolution and display technology. A standard TV typically only displays up to 480i. There are a few HDTV's that have a tube. LCD TV's can display up to 1080p.

Regarding picture quality, LCD tv's are going to display a sharper, clearer and vibrant picture. A tube TV is like looking out a screen door. An LCD TV is looking out with out a screen door.

As for price, an LCD TV is 2-4 times more than a standard TV.

LCD TV's are lighter and thinner, than tube TV. There are many pros and cons. But, I would not recommend going to an LCD TV unless you plan on watching high definition content. Standard cable looks worst on an LCD TV, than a standard tube TV.
