Traditionally, the bride's family pays for everything at the ceremony but members of the wedding party (such as groomsmen) pay for their own attire, which includes their tuxedo rental.
Things are changing in the US though, and it is common for couples who have been working to help pay for costs. It is also becoming common for men to wear suits with bowties rather than tuxedos. In my wedding (this upcoming Friday!) the guys will wear suits they already owned and the girls will wear dresses my fiance and my parents helped pay to have made.

Since he pays for just about everything, surely you can afford to pay this one time. It seems fair to me. That said, if he is comfortable with paying for it, that's his decision. It just looks to me like you're taking advantage a little. Somehow, I have a feeling if this was his sister's wedding, and the two of you were touring places you wanted to see afterward (because you were already going to be in the area!), you wouldn't bat an eye at his paying.

Traditionally, the groom's family pays for the rehearsal dinner and the bride's family gets everything else. Also, those standing up pay for their own garb. Lately, however, it's common for both families to split the cost and the couple themselves chipping in. Just ask if they're willing to pay.

The groom pays for his own tux rental...and the groomsmen pay for their own rentals. Attire is the responsibility of the one wearing it, except in the case of the bride's dress. Her family usually pays for that one...

I believe that is proper to have the groomsmen pay for their own tuxes. This is the way that I have always seen it done. You just give them the shop information and which one you picked out.the rest is up to them.
