My 10 year-old stepdaughter is originally from Africa. She moved in with my husband and I about a year ago. I'm a plus-sized woman. I'm about the same size as actress/singer Queen Latifa but smaller than Mo'nique. My step-daughter is reed thin although she eats well, all day, everyday. We were on the net and stumbled upon a funny article about a guy who is a professional "icecream taster" for Baskin Robins. She said she would love that job. I said I would too. She then snapped "NO that job is not for you! You will just become more big then you already are!" Another time she saw one of my exercise DVDs. She said, "You need to do this now! You are too big!" She always says these things in an angry, frustrated tone. I've been ignoring the remarks. Once she asked me, "How do you find clothes? I have never seen clothes for a person as big as you." How would you respond to these remarks? And no I'm not going on a diet b/c a 10 yr old doesn't like my body. My husband likes it just fine.

Ignore her comments, remember she is just a child growin and they will say anything.
dont let it get to u at all, just laugh it off and they will forget it.
but if u get upset, she may think she has all your powers.
so, just laugh it off and dont make a big deal out of it.
as long as u are happy, her comments do not matter.
Just love her and teach her positively things and not to dwell on looks but on the inside of a person.

That is downright disrespectful of your stepdaughter... even if it's cultural differences. You need to have someone that she respects tell her the reason why putting you down is wrong... but don't just tell her not to do it and leave it at that because she will never understand. Also you can try explaining to her yourself if you feel like she listens to you -- that is for you to judge and and for time to tell.

If you and your husband loves your body and you are in good health, there is no reason to slim down just because society tells you to. She is just a kid so she is probably half joking around half telling the truth. It's definitely not something to get angry about, but it is something to really nip at the bud before she grows up. Good luck!

Step parenting is a tough job - especially with tweens and teens. What you see as a personal attack may have nothing to do with your size. I would suggest a heart to heart talk with your step daughter explaining that when she says these things they hurt your feelings and try to get to the root of her problem. Because if you are happy with your weight the problem is really hers... maybe she is concerned for your health , maybe its a cultural issue, maybe she just says it because she knows it upsets you!

Talk to her. Is it possible that a school friend has said something to her? Let her know that bothers you to have it brought up so much of the time.
