Over 400,000 dead, over 2.5 million displaced, 10, 000 dying every month. The Janjaweed are comitting genocide and the Bush Government is ignoring it. How wonderful that your school is doing something to help, one of the most important things you can do is raise media awareness and spread the information to everyone you know. Knowledge is contagious, Many people in America are completely unaware of the situation in the Sudan, if awareness is raised and enough people speak out, the world (and our government) will have to take notice and do something! Good Luck and Thank You!
EDIT: The US was criticized for invading Iraq because it was not backed by the UN and served no purpose. We went under the pretense of looking for Osama Bin Laden, who was not there, then they changed it to "looking for WMD's", now it is "liberating the Iraqi people. And what is left, thousands dead, a country mired in civil war and very little hope of a good outcome. If enough awareness is raised and there is a UN led coalition(instead of a US invasion), we would not be criticized, it would be a true humanitarian effort.

The African members of "the religion of peace" are being slaughtered by the Arab members of the "religion of peace", it's a civil war, worse than the Sunni-Shite extremist situation in Iraq, but it's only "genocide" when members of that "religion of peace" are being killed. And Bin Laden/Al Q have threatened any US forces that try and intervene, so where are all the anti-US forces when there is a UN request for military help? It's always "call the USA" and then condemn us for anything we do. Let the UN tackle Darfur, if we have no business in Iraq, we certainly have no business in Darfur. In the end, its a political mess, and those who cause and enable genocide, do it for their own political gain. Yes, something needs to be done, and permanently so that the UN can mobilize and respond decidedly in these situations whenever/whereverto whomever they occur. Civilians should not be victimized, the problem is sending in troops won't work unless the culprits are pinned down and forced to fight or surrender, if they surrender, what are you going to do with them? We can't win a war with one hand tied behind our back, we need the authority and military power to not only win the battle but mop up afterwards and secure the peace without "no go zones", etc. the USA has been suckered into too many of those conflicts already.
Oh, and I forgot to mention, the bloodhsed has been going on there for years in Sudan, i(or the whole region), it's one of few places where slavery exists very openly (remember slavery is evil?), but previously it was only Christians being killed or enslaved, no one shed any tears at the UN over this. But it proves that when one group is driven out or massacred, someone else will always be next on the list, because they enjoy doing these horrible things for the joy of doing them, and once they are done there they will probably invade Ethiopia. But then we are imposing our Western values on their culture if we say they are "evil" or "bad" in what they are doing over there, and as soon as we go in we will be the "foreigners" the "occupiers" the "infidels" etc. etc. and it could be they are doing all this just to bait us, because that is what these extremists/terrorists do best, like Mogadishu. To achieve their purpose they will gladly slaughter off their own people, that is how those people think, no scarifice (of others) is too great. The UN must do it without US, because bogging the USA down in there is what the enemy wants.

On Oct.29, 300-500 Arab militiamen on horseback attacked 8 villages. They slaughtered 63 people, 33 of them were children, 27 of these were under 12 years old.

The numbers you allude to in your question vary quite widely - depending on your source - in 3 1/2 years of "revolt", over 200,000 people have been murdered and another 2 1/2 million have been driven from their homes. Raping, pillaging and murder is a daily occurrence.

Despite this genocide, the Sudanese president, Omar Hassan al-Bashir, will not allow U.N. peace keeping forces into West Darfur - despite U.N. resolutions authorizing 22,000 troops to help stop this horrific tragedy.

If the US were to get involved, I seriously believe - despite the admirable intentions - that we would be criticized for yet another "invasion" of a sovereign nation.

We have no strategic interests in the area, and I see no reason for the U.S. even to think about getting involved on the ground. U.N. troops have such restricted rules of engagement that they're basically spectators. Lacking an international consensus, there's little to be done. Should the world's view change, I suspect a few MOAB's over Khartoum would get their attention, but there's really no reason to think along those lines.

If enough people talk about it (especially the U.N.) the people doing this will become ashamed and stop. Talking goes a long way in stopping bad people, no need to send troops, that only makes things worse. You are doing a good thing by spreading the word. Eventually all the talk will bring a stop to this.

That the countries not helping in Iraq, should go into Darfur and help. America could; but it would be streching their military out just a little too far.

i was waiting to read that you thought the united states should do some thing about this but you never and i thank you for that. This is a Muslim thing and the reason its happening they want to control the world and they are advancing any way they can. I think they are in that area because it offers least resistance for them now.

It's a nasty, evil little war. But as always, Africans just let it happen on their continent then holler that we should be doing something about it. It's time they took care of their own back yard.
