Absolutely not you will never go to jail for debts, unless you are extremely wealthy and owe the IRS or possibly back child support. Those are the only two situations that could happen. Depending on how many years it's been since you have paid on the debt go to
http://www.fair-debt-collection.com/statue-limitations.html and check for your state. If it is past the time allowed for collecting in your state let them know, if not it is possible they may sure you, once again it depends on the amount owed.

No you cant go to jail. What will happen is the company you have the debt with will do one of two things put the debt in collections or they will file a civil suit against you. Then you would have to appear in court and the will offer payment arrangements. If its still not paid your credit score just goes way down and for 7 or so years it will be hard to get a credit card or any type of loans.

NO YOU CANNOT GO TO JAIL FOR THIS UNLESS FRAUD WAS TAKEN PLACE, actually after several years it falls off your credit report, exempts you from being sued by a collector. If you were threaten with jail time get is recorded they could be fined big time for that. They do use this quite often to scare people.

If a bill collector told you that, then you can sue them personally. A collector can not tell you something unless they have every intention of doing so. Honestly, most creditors do not want to take you to court, it costs way too much money and time. The only thing they will probably do is send it to another collection agency if they can't get the money.

In the US you can't go to jail for having unpaid debts. If the debts resulted from fraud, you can go to jail for the fraud.

That's called debtors prison, which used to be common in England a few hundred years ago. The problem, if you're in the jug, is how in the heck are you going to earn anything to go toward paying the debt? That was outlawed long ago.

Yes you can go to jail if you fail to show up to court even if the paperwork conveniently dissapears and you neevr get a summons! Which happens ALL the time! So make sure once you get initial papers check in with the court a lot to make sure you know your date!

They won't remain uncollected. The credit card companies will turn the accounts over to a credit collection agency. If you fail to pay them, then you could be looking at jail time or your wages garnished.

Only if they are government fines. One of the first laws ever passed in the US was to de-criminalize indebtedness. It's the 2nd most important grievance the colonists had against the british. It's something to be proud of.
