My husband is a kitchen designer. He says: "Base cabinets must be screwed down first. Then depending on the type of countertop,
Solid surface such as granite, Corian, Silestone are glued down.
Laminate is screwed down through the corner braces at the top of the cabinet from the bottom. If they are not installed, countertop will not fit.

I would go by what C4silly wrote. I have never done what norman is talking about, although it must work for him! Be sure that things are level and that you can fasten (be-it by screw or glue) to each corner of each base cabinet. Sometimes, when a lazy susan corner cabinet is used, there is no back to the cabinet that extends all the way into the actual corner. I usually nail a piece of 2x4 for support there. Be careful when joining your miters at home. The kits with bolts they sell are fine, but glue it and have help supporting it when you flip it over to install it. They will tear out the press-board that is used on alot of laminate tops as backing. Good Luck.

Yes, levelling is important but you would have to put on a plywood top over the countertop and fix it to the top of the counter... by either GOOD wood glue or /and (that is and/or by) screws.. THEN the new countertop is affixed to that plywood top by glue(glue would be the best thing to use)

if you have never done this before, you might forgo the lessons, (both here and in the experience and expense of installing it yourself) and hire it done
it may be the easiest, and by far the least expensive way to go about it
you ask, "what could possibly go wrong?"
oh, boy... there is plenty that can go wrong, injured fingers and toes, bruised head and ribs, torn ligaments....not to mention the cussing one can indulge in when involved with a project like that, especially when the tape measure lies to you. or you forget something minor (like anchoring to the wall sufficiently, and the floor). plumbing can come into play here, as well as wiring, and they can all conspire together to sit and laugh maniacally at you as you lay on the floor bleeding and gasping and cursing.
