put a small starfish under the glass, then spread a thin layer of glue over top and sides of the box and spread sand over the glue. brush off the excess sand. you could even glue tiny shells around the glass window.

Would you consider putting a little mirror underneath the object in the box? If you have something special to put in there, I think it would be neat to be able to view it all around.

Another thought is to use those little mosaic mirror tiles (about 1/4 inch) on the bottom and sides to see fragmented versions of the object.

Just a guess, but it sounds rather fun.

If you can use a victorian look, using jewelry you pick up at garage sales on a velvet background with a bit of lace showing in the back could work nicely painting the box burgundy or plum, or, using one of those huge '50's brooches, on a crumpled net backdrop and painting the box pink and brown, or black, would be cute too.

It depends what you're planning on putting inside the box.... You could also put more than one thing in, if you're putting something small. How about some really nice or really funky buttons....

Put a picture of someone you love in there. Have a nice Christmas.
