I'm surprised nobody yet seems to have posted anything resembling the explanation I read somewhere and had confirmed by a Muslim friend.
It was because some of Mohammed's followers got drunk and lost a battle - and after that - NO booze for you people EVER seems to have been Mohammed's feelings on the subject.
Lots of Muslims drink though.

I am delighted that u have asked a straight question
about Islam. It makes a refreshing change to find a
more intelligent forum than usual. please accept a pat on the back from me.
I think most of us are only too aware of the dangers of
excessive alcohol consumption. It can lead to
unhealthy promiscuity and even death.
I do not feel that Muslims are hypocrites or in any way
to be condemned for their way of life. I think it is
to their great credit. Alcohol is highly addictive and
once u have a real taste for it, it never goes away.
Perhaps it is better not to have started in the first place.
It is a sign of strength, not weakness.
U could offer the complete reverse on that one.
Personally I think moderation is not unreasonable.
The instructions seem to be like those given by any loving
parent to their child about something which is potentially
life destroying.

Since alcohol is harmful to the body it became a rule for the muslims not to have it. Kor'an, by this way, made lots of people go the right way, cuz the humanity those days in the area were all messed up and they needed a mentor, an idea, a way to follow, in my opinion that's why Kor'an landed earth.

"They ask you about intoxicants and gambling: say, 'In them there is a gross sin, and some benefits for the people. But their sinfulness far outweighs their benefit.'" 2:219
"O you who believe, intoxicants, and gambling, and the altars of idols, and the games of chance are abominations of the devil; you shall avoid them, that you may succeed." 5:90
'intoxicants' meaning alcohol. I think the quotes speak for themselves...
Edit: Because it is the devil influencing people to do this stuff. If you think about it, look how much crime alchohol causes... people get violent, and if you become an alcholic, then there is no benefit in that. Alcohol also distracts us from remembering our prayers and makes us lose concentration. For that reason we can not have alcohol.

The reason is simple. Too much alcohol dulls ones ability to think straight. The long term effects are well known to us all.

Thank you for asking a serious question in a serious way.
Our soul and original self only understand the language of reality. If we are away from reality we are away from our Self.
Our worldly body is just an image of the slide of our original self, wordly desires and evil wishes make the vision of our Self dirty so we become away from ourself and go under rule of someone other than us.
What will you feel if your properties are being utilized by some one else?
The alkohol drags you away from reality; It is like to tell lie to you by you, keeping away from facts, your self and almighty God by a false feelings of satisfaction.
I hope your Question is answered.

In the name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful.
They ask thee concerning wine and games of chance. Say, 'In both there is great sin and harm and also some advantages for men; but their sin and harm are greater than their advantage,' And they ask thee what they should spend. Say, 'Spend what you can spare.' Thus does Allah makes His commandments clear to you that you may reflect
Satan seeks only to create enmity and hatred among you by means of wine and the game of chance, and to keep you back from the remembrance of Allah and from Prayer. Then will you keep back?

They ask you (O Muhammad SAW) concerning alcoholic drink and gambling. Say: "In them is a great sin, and (some) benefit for men, but the sin of them is greater than their benefit." And they ask you what they ought to spend. Say: "That which is beyond your needs." Thus Allah makes clear to you His Laws in order that you may give thought." (Qur'an 2:219)

the main reason mentioned in Koran that Muslims better avoid alcohol is that it makes people fighting each others as enemies. but Muslims had differences because the word: h'aram, prohibited, wasn't mentioned like with pork.

It has been told to us in the Quran. And ofcourse we can see the negatives effects of alcohol with our own eyes. It just makes sense!
"O You who believe, intoxicants, gambling, and the altars of idols, and the games of chance are abominations of the devil; you shall avoid them , that you may succeed." Qur’an (5:90)
"They ask you about intoxicants and gambling: say, "In them there is a gross sin, and some benefits for the people, ( alcohol in medicine for example, cocaine in anesthesia and pain medications) But their sinfulness far outweighs their benefit. ........" Qur’an (2:219)
