I have had two. I had heard all of the stories, but honestly, it is not that bad at all. The doctor will spray your throat, and give you a sedative. Believe me, the sedative does wonders! Then he will insert a tube into your throat. Listen carefully. Keep swallowing while he puts it in. If you do that, and don't fight it, it will be very easy. It only takes a second. It's not bad if you keep swallowing. Then, since I was sedated I don't remember much, but the doctor kept telling me what a great job I was doing. I even remember looking up at the monitor and seeing my g. i. tract, and it didn't bother me. The tube comes out before you know it's out. Just let the sedative work for you. Relax with it, and keep swallowing until the tube is in. You'll be fine. The second time I had to have it done, I wasn't worried a bit, and all went well. It's really the anticipation that makes it so awful. Try to relax, although I know you won't (grin) and trust me. It's not that bad. All the best.

I have had it done.. they give you like likes this alka seltza drink that's totally digusting and your can't burp. Well it makes you burp but you can't.. they put you on a table you lie agaisnts it and it moves. Its nothing to be worried about it but that was a couple years ago.

Upper GI Tests

Upper GI tests use X-rays to examine the esophagus, stomach, and first part of the small intestine (the duodenum). See the article The Digestive System to learn more about these organs.

For these tests, a person is required to drink barium. As the barium passes through the digestive tract, it fill and coats the esophagus, stomach, and first part of the small intestine making them more visible with X-ray. Then a fluroscope machine is held over the part of the body being examined and transmits continuous images to a video monitor.

This test is used to diagnose:

Hiatal hernias
Ulcers
Tumors
Esophageal varices
Obstruction or narrowing of the upper GI tract
It may also be used to determine the causes of:

Swallowing problems
Reflux symptoms (dyspepsia or heartburn)
Abdominal pain
Diarrhea
Unexplained vomiting, weight loss, or bleeding
There are several types of tests used to view the upper GI tract, including:

Barium swallow. This is an X-ray test that examines how food moves down the esophagus to the stomach. Approximate time: 30 minutes
Modified barium swallow. This test looks at the beginning of swallowing from the mouth to the pharynx and down to the esophagus. Approximate time: 30 minutes to 1 hour
Upper GI series. This is an X-ray examination of the esophagus, stomach, and upper part of the small intestine. Approximate time: 30-45 minutes
Small bowel series. This is an X-ray examination of the small intestine (small bowel). Approximate time: 2 to 4 hours, depending upon how long it takes for the barium to reach the colon.

all i can tell you is after the drink.. makes sure you drink coca-cola, pepsi will not work and so you can go the bathroom cause if not your stomach is going to be hurting.

I put in a link on her to webmd. about upper gi

If you have a sedative you won't care or remember how the procedure goes! It does make you gag a little but it passes quickly. To be honest I gag more when I brush my teeth! The most important thing is to tell them how nervous you feel, they will be more than pleased to help and support you through the procedure. Get it done, go home and rest and this time tomorrow you will wonder why you worried so much. All the best and Merry Christmas to you!

I had this a whike back to check for helicobacter/ulcer etc. I also had to get it at the other end. I was dreading it but I got the sedative & I don't remember a thing. The sedative acts just like an anaesthetic so you don't need to worry at all. I'm the kind of person that can gag just swallowing a tablet so reckon you will be ok.

I had a GI Endoscopy done a couple of years ago.Nothing to worry about. You will have a choice of either being sedated or they will numb your throat.I opted for having my throat numbed. They will spray the back of your throat with a numbing solution after which they will ask you to swallow the endoscope tube.It sounds terrible but I can assure its not because I am not brave. The container which holds the numbing solution has a long nozzle so you will not feel that either. You'll be fine, don't worry.

No, you wont gag. the fact is, they will sedate you then will numb your throat with a spray that really works well. you wont know what planet your on and wont feel or care about what their doing. by the time you start getting worried, you'll be done. Don't worry, it's not bad due to the sedation. Oh, tell them your having an anxiety attack, even if your not and they will give you more sedation well before the procedure. Good Luck. :)

Try and get some sleep. You'll be in very good hands. These guys know exactly what they're doing and have seen heaps of nervous people. They usually give sedative and will help you keep calm.

You will be ok. I had one back in March and I was nervous wreck. They had problems sedating me as like you I panic, they had to put me to sleep. It went well and I woke up a little drowsey but it went ok. They obviously need to do, relax and think of happy things. You will be fine. Hope goes well.
