Are religious people around you baffled by the fact that you don't beleive in organized religion? I was raised in a very secular muslim home. As i've gotten older i've chosen not to take a religious path. I do beleive in a supreme power/designer/ presence (whatever you wanna call it) but i don't beleive in the judeo christian islamic religions. My in laws are religious....find they always take the opportunity to corner me and attack me for not believeing. What is the psychology behind people like that? WTF, how can i get them to lay off and how can i argue that God is unknowable. How can i get them to leave me alone!!

You can cut them all down by mentioning that when you worship a God, and think you know something about Him or make an unsure judgement under his so-called judgement, that they may be, and likely are, Idol worshippers.

It's the old, "you don't know God (personally), we're both Idol worshippers."

The same arguement can destroy peoples hate filled justification beliefs (you know, only Muslims go to Heaven and so forth).

You, idol worshipper!

The further arguements will be sophisticated instead of simplistic...

I agree that God is unknowable and that there are many paths to enlightenment and I am surprised when I encounter not just My way or the Highway thinking, but people going out of their way to make a big deal about something that is not even their business and has no bearing or effect on their lives in any way.

I have found that the more at peace I am with my own beliefs the less I am bothered by outsiders who would interefere in my private life. The best thing to do when you encounter them is to vote with your feet - just walk away from them.

Mercifully, I feel the time is coming when that mentality will simply die out and fade away. It seems to me the world is changing and will pass those by who can not embrace the ideas of tolerance, unity and respect for all.

Peace!

This is a problem that everyone faces whether they choose to believe or not. There will always be ridicule and angry people who cannot deal with the fact that they may be wrong and so then they create problems. The only way to get them off your back is not let them on. Why would you need to listen to anyone when you know that you are right?

sad to say, I doubt they will ever leave you alone. Some people just can't stop, they have to have everyone be like them. Good luck.
