Yeah, but not only the first and last letters must be right, but all the correct letters must be in the word also, however jumbled.
Our brains dont really "read" they see a symbol and it is associated with a memory, a meaning. The amazing thing is the brain sees the first and last letter (symbols) in the correct area and can take all the other letters between them and un-mix them in order to create something logical, that we have in our memories. If you were to place a word in there that was very unique and you were unfamiliar with it, you would be unable to read it.
