My husband and I didn't have a "real" wedding. We were married at the court house by a Justice of the Peace. We don't want to have a "wedding" exactly, but on our 5th anniversary, we would like to invite our families to a renewal of vows. Nothing huge, no gifts or anything- just a small candlelit service at a chapel. Would this be in poor taste? I'm afraid our 5th year anniversary is too soon..

I don't think it would be in poor taste at all and it is not too soon. I think that would be great. I never had a real wedding either so I know where you all are coming from.

No. Find a nice place to do this. In a living room or some ones back yard. Invite your closet friends and relatives. Tell them that they do not need to bring gifts, but, bring something to eat. He can wear a nice pants suit and a tie, and you, the bride, can wear a nice beige-color (or something in that color scheme) and get married with a justice of the peace. That would be nice, That would be romantic.
Through all the laughter and the tears
it is really hard to believe
that we have been married for five years
this is still like a dream to me.
The man that I love is standing before me
to renew his vows
to have this testament shown to our family and friends
I have never been more proud
I love you.
I hope you like to poem I wrote right off the top of my head.
If you do not like it, that is okay. There are probably better ones out there.

Talk with a pastor about some options. Perhaps you can have your marriage blessed in the church or have some type of a prayer service. With something along those lines, you wouldn't have to feel as though this was a"make up" for not having a large wedding, you would just be making a public profession that you consider your marriage a moral and spiritual commitment, not just a legal status.

I personally think it's too soon. But then again, I don't like the whole vow renewal thing anyway. I mean, you did have a wedding. And it was real! It joined your life with your husband's just as well as a big froofy wedding would have. I would be worried that having this vow renewal would send out the message that your "real" wedding, the one where you actually got married, wasn't good enough.

It is not too soon to renew vows b/c you just want to express feelings now and not later. It is not poor taste to have a small gathering b/c I don't like huge gatherings either!!

Happy Anniversery you 2 lovebirds!:)

i think thats fine since you didn't have a real wedding plus since it is so soon it would really be like your just saying your vows for all to know

if you had a full wedding the first time, it would be in bad taste - but since you didn't it is completely acceptable and your friends and family will probably love a chance to celebrate with you:)
