Let's say a doctor examines the DNA of a mother and daughter, but does not know they are mother and daughter. Can he figure out that they are mother and daughter by looking at their DNA? In other words, is a MATERNITY TEST a specific procedure or can maternity be determined BY ACCIDENT just by looking at DNA? For example, a doctor examines blood from two victims of a crime scene. Can he determine that they are mother and daughter through his examination?

Yes, DNA matches are done by comparing alleles, which are certain markers that exist at particular locations on a DNA strand. A mother and daughter will have more alleles in common than two strangers.

You must be writing a crime novel. The DNA will show striking similarities in your scenario, but there's no way to make that specific relationship link. A really sharp geneticist fiddling with the samples might note advanced telomere degredation in the mom's sample and guess at the relationship with a fairly high degree of certainty, and that might give you an extra chapter or two.

call a criminal expert!! My theory in this one is that there would have been a blend up on the scientific institution! Or the youngster became observed, or became stolen. First state of affairs* You and your spouse conceive a newborn - executed. 9 months later, your newborn is born - executed. You had some reason to suspect that your individual spouse became no longer the start mom, you weren't there, in spite of, so which you had a maternity attempt - executed. spouse = no longer the mummy. So, the two the scientific institution blended up your toddler with yet another. (** Do a paternity attempt to work out if this newborn is inspite of regards to you**) OR 2d state of affairs, this newborn became stolen or observed and provided as your newborn. the two way, call A criminal expert! somebody is attempting to tug one over on you!

No the doctor can't. The samples have to be sent to the DNA lab.
The technicians in the lab will find the match.
