The primary mission of the US Marine Corps is to project ground forces into amphibious operations, either from ship to shore via small boats or ship to shore through helo insertion. They are a small highly mobile force designed to hit hard and fast and establish safe landing sites for follow on forces..
The Army is designed for ground fighting over broad areas of land. They have more aircraft than any other force with their large helocopter fleet.
Both groups, once on the ground, have a similar mission. The biggest difference is how they get there!

I totally agree with Specters answer. When I joined the Army, the Infantry Branch had more speciallized training and Jobs for instance you had 11B-rifleman, 11-C Mortorman, 11-M Bradly, I belive 11-H was the Tow Missle Gunner, and also combat engineer was an 11 series MOS. But the Army has changed and have combined many different Specialties into 1 MOS, and this was done Army wide. 11B are basically highly trained to be able to go to any Infantry Battalion throughout the Army and fall in on different slots from a Stryker to a Bradly, to a LEG, to Airborne etc. Im a soldier in the Army so I can't say much on the Marines, but I do know that like Specter said they are specialized in certain Infantry fields and are the spearhead.

Similarities, I suppose, would be order of battle.
Differences include, but not limited too;
Army has newer weapons, Marines have Army's hand=me-downs.
Marines are better trained and disciplined, much more frugle than Army.
But I guess the biggest difference would be in roles. Marines are more designed for 'mission' Army is more designed for 'whole war'.

Simple.
In the US Army Infantry, we use tactics and strategy to accomplish a mission.
In the USMC Infantry, they just charge straight up the middle.
Thats why the Army has more success with fewer casualties.
;)
Honestly though, theres not much difference. Marines are more for shock effect (and they're darn good at it). Army is more long term.
