I am gonna set up a hot spot and wanted to figure which OS would give the best flexibility in management and security.

I read a lot about Linux boxes and how if you can program the open source you can pretty much do what you want with it. I would love to use XP because I am familiar with it and don't want to have to worry about having to learn how to program.

Any helpful advice would be most appreciated.

In my opinion, Linux is the way to go. The price tag is right, and all of the software you need comes preinstalled with most distros.

With that said..

If all you're setting up is a wifi hotspot, then you might just need a wireless router and broadband. Unless you want to host web pages and a DNS caching server, the router will be more than sufficient. Just plug it in, configure it via a web browser and the instructions from the vendor, and you're wireless!

Good luck and have fun!

Well you aren't suddenly going to become an expert an Linux and programming and what-have-you. Many commercial routers and systems have Linux embedded, so if you want the stability, you may find splashing the cash a smart option.

Personally, you should be fine with XP. If you don't know what you're doing, either you're in for some work and reading, or a lot of hair pulling.

Linux has performance and flexibility behind it; while XP has the familiarity and WIMP (Windows Images Mouse Pointers) setup procedure.

Since Linux is free to obtain and use try doing that way first
