I think it's strange that a retired US marine wouldn't know about this but I'm willing to take a chance and share what is public information anyway.

Any US vet who simply served their country(even the Coast Guard) during the following times...

April 6, 1917 to November 11, 1918 (World War I)
December 7, 1941 to December 31, 1946 (World War II)
June 25, 1950 to January 31, 1955 (Korean War)
February 28, 1961 to May 7, 1975 (Vietnam War)
August 24, 1982 to July 31, 1984 (Lebanon/Grenada)
December 20, 1989 to January 31, 1990 (Operation Just Cause - Panama)
*August 2, 1990 to today (Operation Desert Shield/Storm)

can join the AL. It's usually a nice place to go... and a nice place to bring the family. Play some pool, eat some peanuts, drink some beer. It's always good to rub elbows with a fellow vet wherever you go.

But, if you want to hang out with the big dogs, the VFW is the ticket. You must have some further qualifications to join the VFW. Personally, I've found that I don't fit in with those who never served outside of the USA.

(Either club is good to belong to; the benefits vary a little and you can still go to a club and 'rub elbows' if you don't want to belong.)

Good luck. Merry Christmas

I am a former member of the VFW. A buddy bought me into the group whilst I back from Vietnam and the Post paid my dues at the same time I used to be on Active Duty. When I moved to Central TX I went to a assembly and used to be proficient on the bar afterwards by means of a few historical WWII vet that on the grounds that I had best been in Vietnam and no truly struggle I wasn't quite desired within the VFW. I informed him a couple of nasty comments and walked out and feature not ever rejoined. I am an Officer within the nearby bankruptcy of the "American Veterans For Equal Rights" combating to abolish the DOD's Don't Ask, Don't Tell Policy in order that the Gay and Lesbians can serve our navy overtly.

I agree, check out the various posts in your area. I joined VFW because AL wasn't taking Beirut Vets at the time. I bought a life membership immediately.

My parents prefer the VFW, but it depends on the town you live in. Go check them out.

Join them both (there is no exclusion from either one) and then check out a few functions for yourself. Whichever one you enjoy the most - stay active with that organization. You may find you like them both. Enjoy! And thank you very much for your service.

You will have to drink at all of them to choose the one that suits you!
