Ecuador is spanish for Equator. Ecuador straddles the Equator, thus the name. There is a monument north of Quito called Mitad del Mundo that marks the Equator. There are a lot of shops and restuarants. Its kind of kitchy, but fun. If you ever get the chance, go to Ecuador! Its an amazing place.

Ecuador: Spanish for Equator, so called by virtue of its geographical position.
