This is not the place to research and I refuse to help another BYB!!!
To the person (five answers above mine) if you were an ethical breeder that cared at all about your dogs you would wait until the dog was at least mature before you bred!!!

The best age is after they are two years old and have had all the necessary health tests ran on them. Size doesn't really matter that much but until they are at least 2 years old they are far too much of a puppy themselves to mentally/physically/emotionally take care of the pups because they are in essesence pups themselves.
I second Shepherdgirl! Who would actually breed their dogs on a first heat cycle! Especially when they can come into season as early as 6 months! Grrr. I hate these so called "breeders" who are really just BYB who are out for money! I breed cocker spaniels and german shepherds and rotties. All are family raised; and NEVER a litter before they are 2 years old! Especially with the OFA certification needed to be done on large breeds!

It is best to wait for the first breeding until the female is at least three years old. This assures that the dog's mental and physical development is completed before her system is drained of essential nutrients by the developing litter.
It is best to do your last breeding of a female at about the age of 6 years. Of course , this can vary according to the advice of your veterinarian who would know your dog's actual physical condition and can recommend accordingly.
I do not think that the size of the dog matters as much as it's physical condition does.

A dog should not be younger then 2 years old and also should not be bred before she has passed health certifications ....OFA/PennHip, CERF/PRA, thyroid, etc..not just simple vet exams, She also should not be bred unless she has an impeccable pedigree and has either been show and pointed or obtained her championship or has been evaluated by at least 3 unbiased knowledgable peopel/judges of the breed to determine if she meets breed standard. She also should not be bred if she is not registered with a legit registry such as AKC, UKC or CKC (Canadian Kennel Club).

Dog needs to be at least two years old to be bred. Or she should be.
That is when you can have the hip x-rays done and get a hip rating by OFA.
A dog comes into heat somewhere between 6 months and one year. So they could be bred anytime but should not be until they are older for the health of the mom.
