What is the best bike out there?

I want to get into shape by biking. What's a good bike(that's not too pricy) to go for long distances? Right now I have a bmx and I am pretty sure I can use that one for the meanwhile, but I do know that by getting a bike that's more suited for teh occasion might be more comfortable and better for the bike as well. Any suggestions?
