As a very general rule, no he cannot keep his rank. He normally will enter as an E-3 (since he is prior non-Marine service). There are certain exceptions, of course. It would be best for him to consult his recruiter for specifics and DOUBLE CHECK that enlistment contract before he signs. I have linked the USMC rule below.

No, he would not retain any rank. He would go to boot camp a PFC though, that is easy for the recruiter to hook up. Then he'll be on the promotion points system like every other Marine. Keep in mind though that he gets 2 points for every month in service, so ALL that prior service time will count toward promotion in that manner.
He should also have some kind of "leg up" on meritorious promotions if he has a good understanding of the Marine Corps.
Also remember that the pay system comes from time in service too. So he'll get paid above most of his peers.
And here's one more; say he is out of the Army for 1 year, and that year is still within the 8-year obligated service window, then, that year counts toward pay also...i.e. 4 years active Army, then 1 year out, then joins the Marine Corps= going to boot camp paid as a PFC with over 5 years in service. Then gets promoted will be LCpl with >5 years and so on. His pay will always be a step ahead of his time in boots. (Doesn't cout toward retirement though; only actual time does.)

No, he couldn't keep his E-5 rank in the Marine Corps. I work with 2 Marines right now who are prior service. One was prior Army for 8 years and she didn't get to keep her rank. She was contract PFC through boot camp, and picked up LCpl 6 months into her enlistment. The other is prior Air Force who was a SSgt. Same thing. A friend of mine was prior Army, joined the Marine Corps, and his is the same story. The only branch that can keep their rank switching branches is the Marine Corps.

When I was in the Army we had a guy switch over from the Navy(E-5). He was reduced to E-4. He had to go through Army basic etc.
I am thinking that it would be the same for you trying to transfer to the marines.

Usually , he loses one rank. Talk to a recruiter for the current regulation on this matter.

call your local recruiter for the answer to that question, its readily available, with the recruiting needs now, you`d probably be demoted to a temporary e`4,but return to e-5 after 12-18 mos.
