I don't understand it either ... Look around you; it is impossible for such complexity to arise from nothing. If you believe otherwise, then you believe that energy can be created; something we know to be false (look in any scientific textbook and you'll see what I mean).
Personally, I believe there is a God, but that none of the religions are capable of guessing his nature correctly. So many religious "theories." Only one of them speaks the truth. You do the math.
Edit: I want to add something to answer those saying "then where did come from?" You are missing the point. You trying to figure out God's nature and origin is like a character in the video game Sims trying to figure out information about you. They have a mere subset (if that) of the information you have. You exist in different "dimensions." The laws in your world don't apply to theirs. Therefore, you cannot make assumptions about their world based on the laws that govern your world. You see what I mean?

The evidence suggests that the universe has NOT been here for ever, but that does not mean that God had to be there to start things off. Not knowing why something occurs is a pretty weak reason to assign the cause to God.
So I don't believe that God exists, and here are my reasons:
First, you have to define the term "God." The problem with most theists is that this term is a moving target.
In addition, because there is no evidence either for or against the existence of God, you cannot use deductive logic (a+b=c; therefore c-b=a). You can only reach a conclusion by inductive reasoning using the balance of evidence (90% of A is also B; C is B, so the chances are 90% that C is also A).
I will assert (and others may shoot this down) that the only RELEVANT definition of God states that he intervenes to circumvent natural laws.
If God circumvents natural laws, then it is impossible to understand natural laws. All scientific findings would have to include the stipulation, "it is also possible that these results are an act of God, a miracle, thereby making our research meaningless."
However, since we have been able to expand our knowledge of natural laws (evidenced by every appliance in your kitchen), the scientific method works in this discovery. And the likely conclusion is that God, at least the intervening kind, does not exist.
Additionally, if God is defined as all loving, all powerful, and all knowing, then it is impossible to explain suffering. Either God is not all loving (he acts sadistically), not all powerful (he cannot prevent suffering), or not all knowing (he created suffering by mistake because he didn't know the consequences of his actions).
If God is less than these and/or does not intervene in our existence, then he is either non-existent or irrelevant. The classic argument is that I cannot prove that a china teapot is orbiting the sun directly across from the earth's orbit. But while I cannot prove this is not true, the evidence against it is compelling.
The evidence against God is equally compelling, and while it is not possible to prove beyond any doubt, it makes more sense to live your life as if there were not God.
It is more compelling to me that humans have invented God to reflect the thoughts of the ruling powers in a particular time. Because humans are always looking for reasons, when none are found, it was the natural inclination to declare the cause to be "God" (or gods). As the faith grew, miracles and laws have been ascribed to this Divinity, and an orthodoxy grows up around it.
Now it seems unhelpful to believe in such superstition. The only matters that aid in our ongoing well being are work, location, health, sustenance, and pure, blind luck.
So that's why I don't believe God exists. And you know what? It's okay if you do believe God exists.

That argument is flawed. To say that everything has a cause means that God must've had a cause aswell...Or are you saying that he has been here forever?
The thing with God is, he is not only a paradox, but he is also immposible. The way religion decribes him is just, well it's inconceivable, it's enough to show me that God is nothing more than something created by man to make man feel better.
You will probably have heard the saying 'God is love' well switch that around and think about it. Pefection is something we all strive for, it's why we worship so many celebs who seem to have perfect lives, it's why we feel good knowing that we are a part of a religion that is lead by perfection, it's comforting to know the world was made by something perfect...
Don't you see. God is a comfort blanket created to keep the masses under control. What better way to get people to behave than to promise them an amazing afterlife if they are good. No-one wants to think that life here on earth is all we have and after that, that's it. Death is scary enough. Seriously, whoever invented heaven was a genius!
Even thought science is flawed, it is answering the big questions better than religion ever could. It is trying to offer people logic and reason and they are taking it and throwing it on the bonfire along with all the other stupid things that seem to bother the fundamentalists.
Aside from anything else, Religion is no longer doing the world any good. We've had catholic extremism and catholic murders pretty much since the Catholic chruch was invented. We have Muslim extremism, we've had Jews being persecuted, we've had Hindus being looked down apon for supposedly being polythiest (when they are not.) We've had so much 'moral' debate over stuff that shouldn't require any. We have people in the U.S standing at the side of roads with signs saying '******* die, God laughs.'
The wars, the racism, the suffering and the stupidity religion has spread is rediculous. Especially seeing as theses religions have good decent messages at their heart, but no one listens to them. They all refer to Bible verses that condemn homosexuality, or divorce, or suicide, or euthanasia or abortion...Religion is too complicated, and God is just a euphemism for love. Sadly he is not seen that way by alot of people.
God doesn't exist. Perfection is immposible. If he does exist then free-will is a joke, and we are all puppets.

Matter and/or energy has to have always existed no matter how you look at it. There could never have been a state of nothingness. Something can't come from absolutely nothing..This includes god(s). We know the universe exists and people make up gods all the time. Long ago people thought Thor caused lightning because that was a gap in human understanding at that point. Now that scientific method has increased understanding, people have pushed god(s) into the few gaps left in their understanding. There is no reason to believe in a god. Not only is there no evidence for the existence of god(s), there is nothing really left for them to do. Try science it is much more beautiful and awe-inspiring than myths.

So, let me get this straight. The universe can't have just been there, but god can. When you argue for your god, you're also arguing for the existence of Odin, and Zeus, and Uranus, and all of the other mythical supreme beings. What happened there, did someone wake up one morning and say, "Wow, you know having a god for everything is cumbersome and hard to remember. Let's cut it back to just one, and we'll make that one the supreme creator of the entire universe and tell people that if they have questions we can't answer that they just don't have enough faith." There is a tendency to work in reverse among religions. "Oh, look, that frog used to breath water, but now breathes air, how clever is that, someone must have designed that, 'cause we can't duplicate it so it must have been a really supreme being, don'tcha know." To quote ABC's 20/20 host John Stossel, "Give me a break."

(edit: There were NO answers when I started typing this)
What caused god? He couldn't have just been there forever either.
I'm an atheist because all the evidence I've seen points to the absence of god no matter how much I wish he were real.
All the old faiths came and went.. no body worships Zeus anymore, for instance... no matter that the Greeks of old believed in him just as strongly as You (and I, at one time) believe in God.
Why did Jesus have to die? God could have changed the rules and saved his only begotten son all that agony. I don't want to believe he just has a sadistic side.
Why doesn't God talk to me? I'd believe in him if he'd just whisper in my ear.
What's the purpose of this life, theologically? Just to get into heaven? Why don't we start out in heaven without the desire for sin?
If God knows everything then he made us who we are and knows what we will do before we do it. As such, there is no free will. He could have made us a different way and our choices would be different. If there is no free will, how is there any justification for sending anyone to Hell. Especially since he loves us as a father. Could you send your own child to hell? No matter WHAT she did?
There's a gazillion things about God that just don't add up or make sense. I finally realized that, though I wished for God, all the wishing in the world wouldn't make it so.

Lack of evidence is why I don't believe. There's simply no rational or intelligent proof that there is a god.
Not knowing how the universe was created...or how your computer works...is not reason to make up an imaginary person that magically created it. The ancients used to do that. They had a god for the sun, and the sea. That explained everything for them that they didn't understand. We're past that point now. We've grown up and let those old gods go, and it's time we accept that there are things we don't understand yet.

There is a God. We try to blame him for choices we make in life. Then when things don't work out the way we want them to, we blame God. It has been the easy way out for everyone.
God does exists. I have seen proof. People with uncurable diseases and missing body parts becoming whole again after prayer. I'm not lying (as a minister myself).
Find logic to that, not even science can answer or even help you as a matter of fact.
The problem with people today is that if something isn't self-gratifying then it can't be good or true.
May God help you all. The day will come where you will call upon him, but I'm afraid it will be to late.
God bless you all, even if you don't believe, God Bless you.

What is G-D? and yes, the universe could indeed have been there as long as we conceive forever to be, simply by the way it works, expanding untli it cannot expand any more then shrinking in upon it self until it is so dense it just explodes and continually repeating that cycle. And if you are talking about God, (you can spell him, he doesn't bite)some people just don't need a super being in their lives to tell them how to behave. They don't need the fear of punishment to make them treat others with respect

Oh yeah, say a sky god just did it. It's only SO easy isn't it?
Do you realize that in saying someone created the universe something must have created the creator? Then someone must have created that guy and so on...
It leaves more questions than answers and is a POORLY thought up way of answering problems. There's no science involved. No evidence. Why bother?
