If you got a guarantee maybe you could recoup vet bills if the vet will give written confirmation of the problems if not there is probably nothing you can do. Sorry to say but it sounds as though you bought your puppy from a puppy mill because any reputable breeder would be concerned over the health of a pup that was just sold. You may have to chalk that $200. up to experience and a lesson learned.

If that is the only problems you have consider yourself lucky. The poor little mite most likely came from a puppy mill. It is very unlikely that the breeder ever took the pup to the veterinarian. Most puppy mill breeders stay away from vets if they can. All of the problems you named are easily treated. Live and learn. The breeder is not an honorable person. If you look at the small print of your contract you will probably see that if you choose to return the puppy you will do so at your own expense. And on top of that you will lose the money you gave the vet and most likely never see your refund either as the puppy will mysteriously die on the way there and it will be your fault because you will be responsible for the puppy until he gets back home.
Keep the puppy - lesson learned - do not deal with breeders sight unseen. Buy your pets in person - not at a petshop but through reputable breeders. See your local breed dog shows - they will know of good puppies to buy.

Chances are, you bought this pup from a puppy mill or back yard breeder!! If you can not see where the pup came from and it was shipped, that's my guess. The way they hoard these animals, it's no doubt that the pup had fleas, worms and kennel cough.
Contact the 'breeder' and ask for a copy of the vet visit and call them! They can send you any old receipt, but you want to call and talk with the vet yourself!
Read your contract real good for any type of guarantee. Also, I would report them. Did they advertise as AKC or another type of registry? Report them there! Contact their local human society. Use the link below for more info!

Also, if the pup was shipped, there HAS to be a health certificate from a vet for clearance to fly.

First of all the breeder has 14 dogs, which is too many. This is what it says in the TERMS page...."This breeder assumes no responsibility for the puppy/dog after leaving the premises regarding medical expenses. Also I have noticed that they let their pups go to their new homes at 6 weeks...any responsible breeder will keep them till 7-8 weeks old. They also said in the terms page "This puppy/dog is in good physical health as it appears to the eys upon leaving the premises. Any responsible breeder will have their pups vet checked. They also mention that the cannot guarentee a show quality, but they are sold as a non-breeding, and should be neutered. There is not point in showing a neuterd dog. The parents are not vet checked or registered, so the pups aren't either, so you wouldn't be able to do anything with them anyway....contact you local shelter to report them.....they are a backyard breeder/puppy mill.....here is my site www.geocities.com/rubytuesday_16

I would definitely get a 2nd opinion and unless you got a written health guarantee there is not much that can be done about it. The puppy lemon laws only apply to pet stores. Worms ARE very common in young pups and they have to be dewormed regularly. It IS plausible that he got the fleas from the other dog he was shipped with. But for the kennel cough I would definitely get a 2nd opinion.
"From reading the contract you signed you are out of luck because they state that the health guarantee doesn't cover internal or extrernal parasites (worms and fleas) or communicable diseases (kennel cough) that are are visable. And that they assume no medical expenses for the dog.
Also in response to the post about AKC requiring by law that the pup be returned with a refund/exchange. That is not true. If you read AKC's FAQ page you will see that there is nothing AKC can do about it.
I am sorry but from reading the health guarantee and signing it you should have KNOWN better! You get what you pay for.

You can take the breeder to court if you have paperwork with some kind of guarantee.
A dog doesn't develop detectable worms or kennel cough in two days. I think your breeder is full of it.
If you want the dog, you're going to have to do the vet bills for now. You may be able to recoup the loss in court, but please have the dog treated asap, little breeds like chihuahuas especially are prone to problems from those conditions.
Good luck!

If he just took the dog to the vet two days before it was shipped, ask for a copy of the vet's report. That should settle it one way or another. Were the chihuahua and your friend's dog sent in the same cage? That could account for fleas, it really does sound as though you're being taken for a ride.

Fleas, worms and kennel cough just shows that you have pruchased a dog from a puppy mill or a back yard breeder.
If you like hte dog pony up for the vet bills and PRAY that this is the worst of what you will face with this dog for health problems.
It sounds like the "breeder" is only using dogs to make money.
Good luck.

Contact your state board of animal health and ask about the Puppy Lemon Law.
If the dog had a health certificate 2 days prior to flight it's doubtful that vet looked it over well if it had fleas, worms and kennel cough when you got it. You can call the vet and talk to them too.
And by the way- its Chihuahua.

you have 2 choices, by law (if in contract) that breeder has to take the dog back, or, keep it. as you say you just spent 200 dollars and you dont want to give it back. sooo, as far as i see it, you have a dog that had some problems that your vet will hopefully fix.. smile, enjoy and know next time not to deal with this breeder.
