One has to look at the function of the roots.. they are the lifeblood of the branches.. The branches(leaves, fruit, etc) cannot move forwsard until food supply is functioning and the functioning depends on the root system

Go to a garden store and look at their landscape trees. All their roots are bound, either in a small pot or in a rootball. Their roots do not have access to nutrients, do they?

When the tree is planted, its roots are unbound (undone), released from their pot or rootball. Then, the roots are free to provide the nutritional support for the branches to grow.
